A su jaula llegó

Y el pobre gorrioncillo
De ella se enamoró
Y el pobre, como pudo
Los alambres rompió

Y la ingrata calandria
Después que la sacó
Tan luego se vio libre
Voló, voló y voló

El pobre gorrioncillo
Todavía la siguió
Pa′ ver si le cumplía
Lo que le prometió

La malvada calandria
Esto le contestó
"A usted no lo conozco
Ni presa he sido yo"

Y triste, el gorrioncillo
Luego se regresó
Se paró en un manzano

The Mockingbird

In a gilded cage,
Suspended from a balcony,
There lived a mockingbird,
Singing her misery.

Until one day, a little sparrow,
Flew up to her cage.
"If you should set me free,
I’ll carry you away with me."

And the poor little sparrow,
Fell in love with her.
And so, as best he could,
He broke her from her cell.

But the ungrateful mockingbird,
Once she saw herself free,
At once, she soared away,
She flew and flew and flew.

The poor little sparrow,
Still followed after her,
To see if she would keep,
The promise that she swore.

The wicked mockingbird,
Just this did reply,
"I don’t know you,
Nor have I ever been your prize."

And so, the mournful sparrow,
He flew away once more,
And perched upon an apple tree,
He wept and wept and wept.

And now, in that same cage,
Suspended from that limb,
Lives the little sparrow,
Singing of his love.
