The Mousetrap (Caught In)

After all is said and done,
Not very much will have been either way:
I'm a chronicler of action,
I'm an actor in the play.
I know the lines I have to speak,
I know that I won't ever quit, corpse, or dry,
But the performance gets so pointless
And the days just drift on by.

Every time that I go to turn the pages of the calendar
In the third act of this twenty-ninth year of the show
I'm aware of the latest leading lady and get mad at her...
It's perfunctory, but why she'll never know.

When I began I had my hopes,
Believed that I could be a leading light of the stage,
But now I've stunned myself to silence,
Exhausted all my inner rage,
Extinguished all my joy and violence,
Trapped all my feelings in a cage.

And every time that I go to turn the pages of the calendar
I can see that I'm not really going anywhere;
All these years I have skirted round experience like a scavenger.
Can I really feel? I wonder if I dare?
At the end of the run, will there be anyone who cares?
And behind the actor's pose, heaven knows
If there's anyone left in there.

Après tout ce qui a été dit et fait,
Pas grand-chose n'aura vraiment été d'une manière ou d'une autre :
Je suis un chroniqueur d'action,
Je suis un acteur dans la pièce.
Je connais les lignes que je dois dire,
Je sais que je ne vais jamais quitter, cadavre ou sec,
Mais la performance devient tellement inutile
Et les jours défilent.

Chaque fois que je tourne les pages du calendrier
Dans le troisième acte de cette vingt-neuvième année du spectacle
Je suis conscient de la dernière première dame et je me fâche contre elle ...
C'est superficiel, mais elle ne saura jamais pourquoi.

Quand j'ai commencé, j'avais mes espoirs,
Je croyais que je pouvais être une lumière principale de la scène,
Mais maintenant, je me suis réduit au silence,
J'ai épuisé toute ma rage intérieure,
J'ai éteint toute ma joie et ma violence,
J'ai piégé tous mes sentiments dans une cage.

Et chaque fois que je tourne les pages du calendrier
Je peux voir que je ne vais pas vraiment nulle part ;
Pendant toutes ces années, j'ai contourné l'expérience comme un charognard.
Est-ce que je peux vraiment sentir ? Je me demande si j'ose ?
À la fin de la course, y aura-t-il quelqu'un qui s'en soucie ?
Et derrière la pose de l'acteur, Dieu sait
S'il reste quelqu'un là-dedans.
