Pula

Durante le notti irrorate di fulmini, i bambini Kutu si radunano dentro la grande capanna del vecchio sciamano.
Conosce tutte le storie esistenti, lo sciamano, ed ognuna è per lui come una preziosissima reliquia, che conserva gelosamente sulla punta della lingua.
C'è una storia però, una soltanto, che è in assoluto la sua preferita di sempre, quella che ancora oggi, dopo anni, ama raccontare, l'unica.
Questa storia si chiama Pula, ovvero pioggia.
In un tempo lontano, fatto di mostri ed eroi, viveva un umile agricoltore, dall'animo gentile e devoto.
Possedeva un orticello di modeste dimensioni, che tuttavia bastava a sfamare la sua famiglia.
Sua moglie non desiderava marito più ricco, i suoi figli padre più aitante e i suoi amici compare più onesto.
E a lui questo bastava per essere, in qualche modo, felice.
Però, come in tutte le storie che si rispettino, ad un certo punto l'equilibrio si ruppe.
Una crepa nel muro, un dente cariato, una candela che inspiegabilmente si congiunge al suolo dando vita all'incendio.
La stagione avanzava, e gli occhi dell'agricoltore ansimavano sotto il cielo silente.
Il suo animo gentile e devoto si curvava sempre più, giorno dopo giorno, come una pianta frustata dal vento.
E una domanda scorreva nelle sue vene "Dove è finita la pioggia?"
I giorni fedifraghi si avviluppavano sull'arido suolo senza che una goccia scendesse dal cielo.
Allora l'agricoltore decise di rivolgersi ad un cacciatore, implorandolo.
"Insegui una nuvola, catturala e portamela, come fosse un uccello, ed io ti sarò debitore."
Allora il cacciatore costruì un enorme gabbia e salì in cima alla montagna più alta.
Attese, attese, attese, e finalmente una nuvola venne.
Da dietro un cespuglio, il cacciatore gettò la gabbia sopra di essa, ma quest'ultima se ne sbarazzò facilmente, proseguendo il suo eterno viaggio.
Il cacciatore ignorava che le nuvole sono come i ricordi, e decidono loro quando è il tempo di restare e quando invece è tempo di partire.
Provò quindi a chiedere consiglio ad uno sciamano.
C'è forse un modo per cambiare questa mia sorte nefasta?
Lavati col tuo sudore, così che gli dei possano soddisfarsi della tua miseria.
Bevi le tue lacrime, così che gli dei possano gioire del tuo dolore.
Cibati della tua saliva, così che gli dei possano divertirsi con la tua debolezza.
Ma dopo dieci giorni, ancora la pioggia tardava.
Iniziò dunque a circolare voce che l'umile agricoltore fosse vittima di una maledizione,
E tutti gli levarono il saluto, con la stessa malizia mascherata da saggezza con cui si leva un giocattolo ad un bambino.
L'umile agricoltore perse ogni speranza, nascose i propri occhi tra le mani e decise che non li avrebbe mai più riaperti.
Sarebbe morto così, e i suoi figli l'avrebbero ritrovato esattamente in quel modo.
Fu a quel punto che lo sceneggiatore di Hollywood si fece avanti.
"Io vengo da un paese lontano" disse, "e di certo le nostre vite sono molto diverse, così come i problemi che ci affliggono.
Ma io conosco la soluzione al tuo, e te la posso svelare".
Gli occhi dell'agricoltore riemersero dal mare delle sue mani, lo stava ascoltando.
"Vedi, è semplice. Basta che guardi dritto in camera, ed esclami queste precise parole: 'Non potrebbe andare peggio di così'".

Rain

During nights sprinkled with lightning, the Kutu children gather inside the great hut of the old shaman.
The shaman knows all the stories that exist, and each one is like a precious relic to him, which he jealously guards on the tip of his tongue.
There is one story, however, only one, that is absolutely his favorite of all time, the one that even today, after years, he loves to tell, the only one.
This story is called Pula, which means rain.
In a distant time, made of monsters and heroes, there lived a humble farmer, with a kind and devout soul.
He owned a small vegetable garden, which was enough to feed his family.
His wife did not desire a richer husband, his children a more handsome father, and his friends a more honest companion.
And this was enough for him to be, in some way, happy.
But, as in all stories that are worth their salt, at some point the balance broke.
A crack in the wall, a decayed tooth, a candle that inexplicably joins the ground giving life to the fire.
The season progressed, and the farmer's eyes panted under the silent sky.
His kind and devout soul bent more and more, day after day, like a plant whipped by the wind.
And a question flowed through his veins "Where has the rain gone?"
The treacherous days wrapped themselves on the arid ground without a drop falling from the sky.
Then the farmer decided to turn to a hunter, imploring him.
"Chase a cloud, capture it and bring it to me, as if it were a bird, and I will be in your debt."
So the hunter built a huge cage and climbed to the top of the highest mountain.
He waited, waited, waited, and finally a cloud came.
From behind a bush, the hunter threw the cage over it, but the cloud easily got rid of it, continuing its eternal journey.
The hunter did not know that clouds are like memories, and they decide when it is time to stay and when it is time to leave.
He then tried to ask a shaman for advice.
Is there perhaps a way to change this unfortunate fate of mine?
Wash yourself with your sweat, so that the gods may be satisfied with your misery.
Drink your tears, so that the gods may rejoice in your pain.
Feed on your saliva, so that the gods may amuse themselves with your weakness.
But after ten days, the rain still delayed.
So the rumor began to circulate that the humble farmer was the victim of a curse,
And everyone stopped greeting him, with the same malice disguised as wisdom with which a toy is taken away from a child.
The humble farmer lost all hope, hid his eyes in his hands and decided that he would never open them again.
He would die like that, and his children would find him exactly like that.
It was at that point that the Hollywood screenwriter came forward.
"I come from a faraway land" he said, "and certainly our lives are very different, as are the problems that afflict us.
But I know the solution to yours, and I can reveal it to you".
The farmer's eyes re-emerged from the sea of his hands, he was listening to him.
"You see, it's simple. You just have to look straight into the camera and say these exact words: 'It couldn't get any worse than this'".
