Đêm năm xưa trăng chiếu rọi đầu thôn
Trăng mấy mùa chưa tròn
Có người vợ hiền ngồi ôm con
Mà đôi mắt trông mỏi mòn

Bao xuân qua năm tháng chừng phôi pha
Con lớn từ bao giờ
Mà chưa hề gặp mặt người cha
Còn tay súng giữ quê nhà

Đêm hôm nao nghe tiếng gà làng xa
Thấp thoáng bà mẹ già chờ trông con
Tóc đã bạc phơ phơ
Mắt đã nhòa bơ vơ
Lưng đã còng hơn xưa
Rau cháo đời đơn sơ

Bao nhiêu năm sương trĩu nặng đôi vai
Lam lũ cả một đời
Giờ trong tay đứa cháu nhỏ thơ ngây
Mơ bóng người con trai rồi cất tiếng ru hời
