Habría que decir que en lo inmediato
La vida se ha ido haciendo más difícil
De rojo se mancharon nuestros sueños
La boca ya no encuentra su palabra
La noche envuelve el cielo y lo aprisiona
La patria va alejándose del hombre
Y todas las banderas que flamearon
Se han ido desgarrando con el tiempo.

Habría que decir que ya no estamos
Cantando por las grandes alamedas
Ya no es la misma siembra en la guitarra
Ya no es el mismo canto el que da vida.
Habría que afirmar valientemente
Que un mundo nos separa de ese mundo
Y un mundo es lo que queda destruido
Y un mundo por hacer es la tarea

Yo quiero savia y amor de poesía
Y lucho en el poema y en la tierra
Mi combate es luz y fuego en la vendimia
De la revolución y las estrellas.
Y busco mi país donde los hombres
Se asignen el deber de la sonrisa
Y busquen en el mar de lo invisible
La última razón en esta vida.

Habría que decir sin más remedio
Que el tiempo es más profundo que la vida
La luz se vuelve sombra en un instante
La historia va cambiando los motivos,
Naufraga hasta la nave más serena
La muerte se despierta con su espada
La rubia miel en gris se va bebiendo
Y el día va naciendo entre las ruinas.

We must say that in the immediate
Life has become more difficult
Our dreams were stained red
Words cannot be spoken
Darkness envelops the sky and imprisons it
The homeland is moving away from man
And all the flags that flew
Have been torn apart over time.

We must say that we are no longer here
Singing along the great boulevards
The guitar is no longer the same seed
The song that breathes life into us is no longer the same.
We must boldly state
That a world separates us from that world
And a world is what has been destroyed
And a world to be made is the task at hand.

I desire the wisdom and love of poetry
And I fight in the poem and on earth
My fight is light and fire in the harvest
Of revolution and stars.
And I seek my country where men
Assign themselves the duty of smiling
And seek in the sea of the invisible
The ultimate reason for this life.

We must say without hesitation
That time is deeper than life
Light turns to shadow in an instant
History changes its motives
Even the most peaceful ship sinks
Death awakens with its sword
The golden honey turns gray
And the day is born among the ruins.
