El Viejo y el Pajarillo

Vivió una vez un viejo solitario en la montaña
Decía que buscaba el amor y no lo encontraba
En mitad del bosque construyó una cabaña
¿Existe el amor?, pensó, ¿o es sólo una palabra?
¿Lo sabe la flor si se esconde tras el alba?
¿O tal vez lo sabe el pez, en el secreto del agua?
¿¡Dónde está el amor!?, buscó el viejo en la mañana
¿¡Dónde está el amor!?, buscaba en la madrugada

Una tarde roja, en la vereda arbolada
El viejo vio a un pajarillo que cayó de la rama:
Pobre pajarillo que a su madre buscaba
Danzando de miedo con sus alas tempranas
¡Mira, ya te acecha el carroñero tras las zarzas!
¡Mira, ya viene con sus dientes y sus garras!
Ni el lobo ni el aguilucho podrán hacerte nada
Pequeño pajarillo, te cuidaré con el alma

El viejo recogió semillas y gusanos
Y picoteaba el pajarillo del cuenco de sus manos;
Bebía de la hierba gotas de rocío fresco
Idénticas a sus ojillos redondos y buenos
El viejo trenzó una cuerda con hojas de palmera
Y cantaba alegre el pajarillo posado sobre ella
Qué feliz el pajarillo y qué triste el viejo
Que tenía el amor tan cerca y lo buscaba lejos

Pronto se hizo grande el pajarillo:
Qué hermosas sus alas, qué hermoso su trino;
Qué hermosas plumas blancas, y su pecho rojizo
Parecido a los otros pájaros del árbol vecino

Un día al despertar, el pajarillo ya no estaba...
¡Ay!, ¡mi pajarillo!, lloró el viejo en la cabaña
¿Habrá echado a volar para unirse a su bandada?
¿O tal vez encontró el amor que yo tanto buscaba?

De tristeza y hambre el viejo cayó enfermo
La soledad secó todos los frutos de su huerto
Tan grande era su pena y tan grande su silencio
Que hasta el buitre negro empezó a girar en el cielo
Cuando el viejo abrió por fin los ojos casi muerto
Vio frutos silvestres esparcidos por su cuerpo:
Moras, frambuesas, un edén en su pecho
Y fruto del milagro el viejo levantó de su lecho

¡Has sido tú, pajarillo!, dijo el viejo
¡Tú siempre me veías y era yo el que estaba ciego!
¡Son tuyos estos frutos y era tuya la alborada
Cantando junto a los demás, fundido en la mañana!
Siempre estuviste aquí y no te había visto
El amor estaba en mí y yo fuera de mí mismo

Y así es como, por fin, el viejo logró comprander
Que, igual que el pajarillo, el amor nunca se fue

The Old Man and the Little Bird

There once lived a lonely old man on a mountain
He said that he was looking for love and couldn’t find it
In the middle of the forest he built a cabin
Does love exist, he thought, or is it just a word?
Does the flower know if it hides behind the dawn?
Or maybe the fish knows, in the secret of the water?
Where is love!, the old man searched in the morning
Where is love!, he searched in the early morning

One red afternoon, on the tree-lined path
The old man saw a little bird that fell from the branch:
Poor little bird that was looking for its mother
Dancing with fear with its early wings
Look, the scavenger is already stalking you behind the brambles!
Look, it’s coming with its teeth and claws!
Neither the wolf nor the eaglet can do anything to you
Little bird, I will take care of you with my soul

The old man collected seeds and worms
And the little bird pecked from the bowl of his hands;
He drank drops of fresh dew from the grass
Identical to his round, kind eyes
The old man braided a rope with palm leaves
And the little bird sang happily perched on it
How happy the little bird and how sad the old man
Who had love so close and was looking for it far away

Soon the little bird grew up:
How beautiful its wings, how beautiful its trill;
How beautiful white feathers, and its reddish chest
Similar to the other birds in the neighboring tree

One day upon waking up, the little bird was gone...
Oh, my little bird!, the old man cried in the cabin
Has it flown away to join its flock?
Or maybe it found the love I was looking for so much?

From sadness and hunger the old man fell ill
Loneliness dried up all the fruits of his orchard
So great was his sorrow and so great his silence
That even the black vulture began to circle in the sky
When the old man finally opened his eyes, almost dead
He saw wild fruits scattered around his body:
Blackberries, raspberries, an Eden on his chest
And as a result of the miracle, the old man rose from his bed

It was you, little bird!, said the old man
You always saw me and I was the one who was blind!
These fruits are yours and the dawn was yours
Singing along with the others, blended into the morning!
You were always here and I hadn’t seen you
Love was in me and I was outside myself

And that is how, finally, the old man managed to understand
That, just like the little bird, love never left
