Rapportait de son voyage en Chine
Mille souvenirs très précieux
Sur le langage étrange de ceux qui plissent les yeux

Il parait qu'un jour de fête
Il alla muni d'un interprète
Présenter ses vœux à trois Mandarins
Avec lesquels il voulait bavarder un brin

À la porte, dès qu'il apparut
Les trois mandarins jusqu'à terre
S'inclinèrent en un profond salut
Et d'une même voix lui récitèrent

Cette allocution abstraite
Ayant parut claire à l'interprète
Il dit simplement d'un ton pénétré
"Voici la traduction on vous a dit" "entrez"

"Quoi, c'est tout" dit le Français surpris
Un seul mot traduit leur parabole
Lors, croyant qu'il n'avait pas compris
Les mandarins reprirent la parole

Notre Français d'un pas leste
S'avança devant les trois célestes
Mais comme il allait répondre au salut
D'une commune voix les mandarins dirent "U"

"Interprète, expliquez moi donc"
"Qu'est-ce encore que ce "U" veut dire"
L'interprète se gratta le menton
Et dit "voilà, Monsieur, je vais traduire"

"Cher ami au blanc visage"
"Un bon vent t'amène à nos rivages"
"La nature en joie, fête l'étranger"
"Car voici la saison où fleurit l'oranger"
"Nos épouses mandarines"
"Sont là-bas dans la chambre voisine"
"Excepté la femme de Pingpengsé"
"Elle n'a pas pu venir, elle est indisposée"
"Le docteur est venu mais il n'y a rien vu"
"D'ailleurs on sait qu'il n'y a jamais rien connu"
"C'est un vieillard pointu, d'ailleurs il est cocu"
"Et puis, n'en parlons plus, tout cela est superflu"
"Ami au blanc visage, sois le bienvenu"
"Oui, tout cela ce dit" "U"

The Three Mandarins

A Frenchman of good looks
Brought back from his trip to China
A thousand very precious memories
On the strange language of those who narrow their eyes

It seems that one day of celebration
He went with an interpreter
To present his greetings to three Mandarins
With whom he wanted to chat a bit

At the door, as soon as he appeared
