Ein ungewohnter Hauch von Feiertag liegt auf der Stadt
Kein Stau, kein Lärm, die Schienen der Strassenbahn glänzen matt
In der Vormittagssonne. Noch ein Spätsommeridyll!
Die Läden sind geschlossen, all die Fahnen hängen still
Seit vierundzwanzig Jahr'n ist Mehmet in der Gießerei
Seit vierundzwanzig Jahr'n kommt er hier jeden Tag vorbei
Heut hat er keine Eile, er kann im Vorübergeh'n
Im TV-Shop im Schaufenster die Feierstunde seh'n:
Dreiduzendfach, der Präsident, von einer Monitorwand
Und es geht um Recht und Freiheit - für jeden in diesem Land

Mehr als die Hälfte seines Lebens arbeitet er hier
Zwei Töchter und ein Sohn sind aufgewachsen im Revier
Die Kollegen mögen ihn, still und gewissenhaft
Drei Zimmer und ein Ford Escort, ja, Mehmet hat's geschafft

Mit Überstunden, auch mal ein Besuch in der Türkei
Ein Angetrunk'ner streift ihn, eine kleine Rempelei
Und lallend dreht der Mann sich um, bierdünstend und verschwitzt
Und Mehmet sieht die Klinge nicht, die hinter ihm aufblitzt
Und grundlos, wie von Sinnen, sticht der Fremde auf ihn ein
Und das Fernsehbild wird dunkelrot und er fällt wie ein Stein

Und die Leute auf der Straße? Alle haben sie's geseh'n
All' die unbescholt'nen Bürger, die im Halbkreis um ihn steh'n
Keiner hat ihn beigestanden, keinem kommt es in den Sinn
Ihm zu helfen, ihn zu trösten, keiner kniet sich zu ihm hin
Und im Fernseh'n singen sie die Strophe von der Einigkeit
Und der Notarztwagen kommt nach einer ganzen Ewigkeit
Und sie reinigen das Pflaster, dort, wo er noch eben lag
Und eigentlich war heut für alle doch ein guter Tag
Doch seit den Vier-Uhr-Nachrichten ist der Tag nicht mehr gut
Da sind noch nur Schmerz und Trauer, und mir ist zum Heul'n zumut'

An unfamiliar holiday atmosphere hangs over the city
No traffic, no noise, the streetcar tracks shine dull
In the morning sun. Still a late-summer idyll!
The shops are closed, all the flags hang still
For twenty-four years, Mehmet has been in the foundry
For twenty-four years, he has been passing by here every day
Today he is in no hurry, he can take his time
To watch the celebration in the TV shop window:
Thirty-six times, the president, from a monitor wall
And it is about justice and freedom - for everyone in this country

For more than half his life he has been working here
Two daughters and a son have grown up in the Ruhr Valley
His colleagues like him, quiet and conscientious
Three rooms and a Ford Escort, yes, Mehmet has made it

With overtime, also a visit to Turkey now and then
A drunk brushes against him, a little jostling
And slurring, the man turns around, beer-smelling and sweaty
And Mehmet does not see the blade that flashes behind him
And senselessly, as if out of his mind, the stranger stabs him
And the television picture turns dark red and he falls like a stone

And the people in the street? They all saw it
All those respectable citizens standing in a semicircle around him
No one stood by him, it does not occur to any of them
To help him, to comfort him, no one kneels down to him
And on television they sing the verse about unity
And the ambulance arrives after an eternity
And they clean the pavement, where he had just been lying
And actually it was a good day for everyone
But since the four o'clock news, the day has not been good
There is only pain and sorrow, and I feel like crying
