Die Suchlisten an den Rot-Kreuz-Baracken –
Vater, der aus Gefangenschaft heimkehrt –
Der dürre, fremde Mann mit Stoppelbacken
Der weinend die Bahngleise überquert!
Onkel Heinz, der mich in der Dorfgaststätte
Heimlich an seinem Bier mittrinken lässt –
Ich zieh' auch mal an seiner Zigarette
Und Tante Ille denkt, ich sei derweil beim Kinderfest!

Wie manches, dem wir kaum Beachtung schenken

Die Dramen, morgens vor dem Kindergarten –
Verzweiflung, wenn Mutter gegangen ist –

Sonntage, wenn Verwandte uns besuchen
Wenn alles lacht und durcheinander spricht
Geschirr klirrt – draußen gibt's Kaffee und Kuchen –
Johannisbeer'n im Garten funkeln rot im Sonnenlicht

When flipping through the pictures of my childhood
I find many yellowed ones through all the years
And others of almost unbelievable clarity
Of moments that were important to me!
Of Grandmother, peeling potatoes in the spring sunshine
In the front yard -
I play in the sand and listen to her tell stories
And know that - if she catches me - she will blow my nose

How much we hardly pay attention to
Nevertheless, it shapes us for a lifetime
And carries its colorful stone, as a keepsake
Into the mosaic of our soul!

The search lists at the Red Cross barracks -
Father, returning home from captivity -
The thin, strange man with stubble
Who tearfully crosses the railroad tracks!
Uncle Heinz, who secretly lets me drink with him in the village inn
From his beer -
I also take a puff on his cigarette
And Aunt Ille thinks I'm at the children's party!

The dramas of the morning before kindergarten –
Despair when Mother is gone –
The agony of waiting for her for a day
And always the fear that she will forget me here!
Sundays when relatives visit us
When everyone laughs and talks to each other
Dishes clinking - coffee and cake outside -
Currants in the garden sparkle red in the sunlight
