Das Butterbrot

Zehn Minuten dauerte die große Autofahrt genau.
Dann stand ich auch schon gestrandet in einem biblischen Stau:
Eine Baustelle am Horizont, Vollsperrung, ich sah rot,
Ich fluchte, spielte am Radio und suchte mein Butterbrot.
Ich fand es verlockend knisternd im Handschuhfach, eine Pracht!
Diese Art von Butterbrot, die keiner so wie Ilse macht:
Noch das Brotpapier beschriftet mit .E" und "R" fürsorglich,
Dieses "E" heißt Emmentaler und das "R", es ist für mich.
Ich packte es aus, es duftete betörend
Noch die warme Backstube heraufbeschwörend.
Die knusprige Kruste splitterte, lustvoll biß ich hinein
Und mir fielen alle Butterbrote meines Lebens ein:

Diese Köstlichkeit, die meine Oma mir auf einem Brett
Mitleidig ins Zimmer schob .Tja, ohne Abendbrot ins Bett!"
Ein Radieschenbrot und eins mit Quark und Schnittlauch, welch ein Fest!
Und noch eins mit Rübensirup, ich liebte Stubenarrest!
Oder wenn mein Vater abends von der Arbeit wiederkam
Und aus seiner Aktentasche diese Alubüchse nahm,
Die ein roter Einweckgummi doppelt genommen umschloß,
Den er sorgfältig abstreifte, wie ich dieses Spiel genoß,
Wenn er den matt-silbrigen Deckel aufmachte
Und vom Brot, das er wieder nach Hause brachte,
Mir und meiner Schwester schweigend je eine Hälfte anbot.
Hab' nie was Besseres gegessen, als Vaters Hasenbrot.

Was war das für ein steinhartes und zugleich köstliches Brot,
Das man Mutter auf dem Schwarzmarkt für die alte .Leica" bot!
.Es gibt kein hartes Brot, es gibt nur kein Brot und das ist hart!"
Den Spruch hab ich früh gelernt, begriffen und mir wohl bewahrt:
Keinen Bissen soll ich kriegen oder ersticken daran,
Wenn ich jemals ein Stück Brot achtlos zu Boden werfen kann!

Ich hab bei Meistern gegessen, Sternezaubrern hinterm Herd,
Aber was ich über ihre Künste nie vergessen werd,
Ist das Brot, das warm und luftig aus der Meisterküche kam
Und den Abdruck meiner Zähne mit der dicken Butter nahm,
Ist das Tellerchen, das ich meiner Mutter bereitet hab,
Das dem Tellerchen so ähnlich war, das sie als Kind mir gab:
Brot zu Würfeln klein geschnitten ohne Rinde, das, wies scheint,
Alle Kinder kriegen, wenn's das Leben gut mit ihnen meint -
Auch was mich angeht: Für meine letzte Reise
Begehr' ich keine königlichere Speise!
Hupen, Anlasser, Motoren, der Weg war nicht mehr verstellt,
Ich fuhr an und dachte: Ich hab alle Reichtümer der Welt!
Ich kann atmen, ich kann lieben, und ich leide keine Not.
Ich bin frei und hab in meinem Handschuhfach ein Butterbrot!

The Butterbrot

The big car ride took exactly ten minutes.
Then I was already stranded in a biblical traffic jam:
A construction site on the horizon, full closure, I saw red,
I cursed, fiddled with the radio and looked for my butterbrot.
I found it temptingly crackling in the glove compartment, a splendor!
The kind of butterbrot that no one makes like Ilse:
Even the bread paper labeled with "E" and "R" so thoughtfully,
This "E" stands for Emmentaler and the "R", it's for me.
I unpacked it, it smelled beguiling
Evoking the warm bakery.
The crispy crust shattered, I bit into it with pleasure
And all the butterbrots of my life came to mind:

This delicacy, which my grandma pushed me on a board
Compassionately into the room, "Well, off to bed without dinner!"
A radish bread and one with quark and chives, what a feast!
And another with beet syrup, I loved being grounded!
Or when my father came back from work in the evening
And took this aluminum box out of his briefcase,
Which a red canning rubber enclosed twice,
Which he carefully removed, how I enjoyed this game,
When he opened the matt-silver lid
And from the bread that he brought home again,
Silently offered me and my sister half each.
I've never eaten anything better than Dad's "Hasenbrot".

What was that rock-hard and at the same time delicious bread,
That one offered mother on the black market for the old "Leica"!
"There is no hard bread, there is only no bread and that is hard!"
I learned the saying early, understood it and kept it well:
I shouldn't get a bite or choke on it,
If I can ever carelessly throw a piece of bread on the floor!

I have eaten with masters, star magicians behind the stove,
But what I will never forget about their arts,
Is the bread, warm and airy, that came from the master's kitchen
And took the imprint of my teeth with the thick butter,
Is the little plate that I prepared for my mother,
That was so similar to the little plate she gave me as a child:
Bread cut into small cubes without crust, it seems,
All children get it when life treats them well -
As for me: For my last journey
I desire no more royal food!
Horns, starters, engines, the way was no longer blocked,
I drove on and thought: I have all the riches of the world!
I can breathe, I can love, and I suffer no hardship.
I am free and have a butterbrot in my glove compartment!
