Morgen brennt auf meinem Kuchen wieder eine Kerze mehr
Langsam muss ich überlegen, wie lang ist das schon her
Dass da noch gar keine brannte, wie alt ich denn nun schon bin
Dabei geh'n mir mit den Jahren Geburtstage durch den Sinn
Den ersten hab' ich verschlafen, so hat man es mir erzählt

Ich entnehme noch der Chronik, dass ich aufwuchs und gedieh

Doch mit vier kann ich mich schon an der Hand meiner Mutter seh'n
Nach 'nem bisschen Milch und nach Trockenkartoffeln Schlange steh'n
Und dann wünschte ich mir sehnlichst eine Spielzeug DC 3
Das war'n die "Rosinenbomber", bei der Luftbrücke dabei
Und darüber wurd' ich sieben, und endlich bekam ich sie
Und ein Care-Paket von "drüben", happy birthday to me!

Ich war neun, als ich meine erste lange Hose bekam
Und erlöst von Strümpfen, Leibchen und Strumpfbändern Abschied nahm
Mit zwölf gab's eine Gitarre, doch ich übte nicht so recht
Denn fortan galt mein Int'resse nur noch dem and'ren Geschlecht
Da musst' ich mit 16 dringend Moped ohne Auspuff fahr'n
Mit 'ner James Dean-Wendejacke und Frisierkrem in den Haar'n
Dann bin ich kleben geblieben wegen Mathe und Chemie
Und mehrerer großer Lieben, happy birthday to me!

Dann mit 20 kam der Ernst des Lebens, Schluss der Fröhlichkeit
Zur Erinn'rung hab' ich heut' noch zwei Krawatten aus der Zeit
Doch mit 24 kam mir die Erkenntnis über Nacht
Dass nur glücklich ist, wen auch der Ernst des Lebens glücklich macht
So entschloss ich mich, den Weg des größ'ren Widerstands zu geh'n
Mein Handwerkszeug war'n die Noten und mein Reichtum die Ideen
Die in meinem Kopf rumoren, und voll Hoffnung sang ich sie
Und ich fand offene Ohren, happy birthday to me!

Und ich zog mit meinen Liedern durch das Land jahrein, jahraus
Manchen Bahnhof, manche Straße sah ich öfter als mein Haus
Und das Leben, das ich führte, machte mich glücklich und frei
Doch der Frau an meiner Seite wurd' ich ein Fremder dabei
Und wir haben uns verloren, ohne Hass und ohne Zorn
Ganz leis', nach so vielen Jahr'n und ich begann noch mal von vorn
Mit den Träumen, die mir blieben im Gepäck, und ich fand "sie"

Dreiunddreißig mittlerweile stellt' ich staunend fest, dass man
Einem über dreißig hin und wieder doch vertrauen kann
Denn ich sah, dass ich, mal abgeseh'n von einem grauen Haar
Und den Kratzern an der Seele, immer noch der alte war
Weder Jahre noch Erfolg machten mich weder brav und zahm
Höchstens ein Geschenk von ihr, das schönste, das ich je bekam

Drittens soll das Haus voll alter Freunde aus den Fugen geh'n

That there weren't any burning at all, how old I am now
Over the years, birthdays come to my mind
I slept through the first one, so I've been told
When the first bombs fell, I came into the world
As it splintered and crashed, everyone rushed and screamed

I still gather from the chronicle that I grew up and thrived
Had measles, mumps and rubella, chickenpox and diphtheria
But at four, I can already see myself holding my mother's hand
Standing in line for a bit of milk and dried potatoes
And then I dearly wished for a toy DC 3
Those were the "Raisin Bombers" during the airlift
And I turned seven over it, and finally I got it
And a care package from "over there", happy birthday to me!

I was nine when I got my first pair of long pants
And said goodbye to socks, undershirts and garters
At twelve, I got a guitar, but I didn't practice much
Because from then on, my interest was only in the opposite sex
At 16, I urgently needed to ride a moped without an exhaust
With a James Dean windbreaker and hair cream in my hair
Then I got stuck because of math and chemistry
And several great loves, happy birthday to me!

Then at 20, the seriousness of life came, the end of joy
I still have two ties from that time as a reminder
But at 24, the realization came to me overnight
That only those who are happy with the seriousness of life are happy
So I decided to take the path of greater resistance
My tools were the notes and my wealth the ideas
That rumbled in my head, and full of hope I sang them
And I found open ears, happy birthday to me!

And I traveled with my songs through the country year after year
I saw many a train station, many a street more often than my house
And the life I led made me happy and free
But I became a stranger to the woman at my side
And we lost each other, without hate and without anger
Very quietly, after so many years and I started all over again
With the dreams I had left in my luggage, and I found "her"

Thirty-three now, I was amazed to find that one
Can trust someone over thirty after all
