عيناكِ غابتا نخيلٍ ساعةَ السحَرْ،
أو شُرفتان راح ينأى عنهما القمر.
عيناك حين تبسمان تورق الكرومْ
وترقص الأضواء... كالأقمار في نهَرْ
ومقلتاك بي تطيفان مع المطر
وعبر أمواج الخليج تمسح البروقْ
سواحلَ العراق بالنجوم والمحار،
كأنها تهمّ بالشروق
فيسحب الليل عليها من دمٍ دثارْ.
وكلَّ عام -- حين يعشب الثرى -- نجوعْ
ما مرَّ عامٌ والعراق ليس فيه جوعْ.

مطر...
في كلّ قطرة من المطرْ
حمراء أو صفراء من أجنَّةِ الزَّهَرْ.
وكلّ دمعة من الجياع والعراة
وكلّ قطرةٍ تراق من دم العبيدْ
فهي ابتسامٌ في انتظار مبسمٍ جديد
أو حُلمةٌ تورَّدت على فم الوليدْ
في عالم الغد الفتيّ، واهب الحياة.

The Hymn of the Rain

Your eyes are a palm grove at dawn,
Or two balconies from which the moon goes away.
Your eyes, when they smile, make the vineyards flourish
And the lights dance... like moons in a river
And your eyes roam with me in the rain
And across the waves of the gulf, the lightning wipes
The shores of Iraq with stars and oysters,
As if it were about to rise
And the night draws a shroud of blood over it.
And every year -- when the earth becomes green -- we starve
Not a year has passed without hunger in Iraq.

Red or yellow from the petals of flowers.
And every tear of the hungry and naked
And every drop that is shed from the blood of the slaves
It is a smile waiting for a new smile
Or a little dream that has reddened on the mouth of the newborn
