Agapito Malteni era un ferroviere

Faceva quel mestiere forse per l'amore
Di viaggiare sul locomotore

Perché la gente scappa ancora non capiva
Dall'alto della sua locomotiva

La gente che abbandona spesso il suo paesello
Lasciando la sua falce in cambio di un martello

Il misero guadagno del bracciante

Ma una tarda sera partì da Torre a Mare
Doveva andare a Roma e dopo ritornare
Pensò di non partire oppure senza fretta
Di lasciare il treno a Barletta

Svelò il suo grande piano all'altro macchinista
Buono come lui ma meno utopista
Parlò delle città, di genti emigrate
A Gorgonzola oppure a Vimercate

E l'altro macchinista capì il suo compagno
Felice e soddisfatto del proprio guadagno
E con le parole cercava di fermarlo
Ma fu una mano ad addormentarlo

Agapito Malteni was a railroad man,
He lived in Manfredonia, down in Tavoliere,
Well mannered, a Christian soul,
With a locomotive at his command,

From a good family, young and married,
His eyes told a tale of "deeply troubled",
He worked that job perhaps because he loved,
To travel on his locomotive,

Though troubled, his heart would weep
As he watched his people leave,
For why his people fled he could not grasp
From his lofty locomotive

His people often left their small village
Trading their sickles for a hammer
They were people who remembered in their wandering hearts
The miserable earnings of a laborer

But one late evening he left from Torre a Mare
He was to go to Rome and then return
He thought of not leaving or at least without rushing,
Of stopping the train in Barletta

He revealed his grand plan to the other engineer,
Kind like him but less idealistic
He spoke of the cities, of emigrated people
In Gorgonzola or in Vimercate

And the other engineer understood his comrade,
Happy and satisfied with his own earnings
And he tried to stop him with words
But a hand put him to sleep
