Evelyn, come here,
I saw him passing by the corner of the old neighborhood,
With the swagger that tough guys have when they walk,
His hands always in the pockets of his coat,
So no one knows which one holds the knife.

He wears a wide-brimmed hat, tilted to one side,
And sneakers, in case there's trouble, to run away,
Dark glasses so you can't tell what he's looking at,
And a gold tooth that shines when he laughs.

About three blocks from that corner, a woman
Walks the entire sidewalk for the fifth time,
And enters a doorway and takes a drink to forget
That the day is slow and there are no clients to work with.

A car passes very slowly down the avenue,
It has no markings, but everyone knows it's the police,
Pedro Navaja, his hands always inside his coat,
Looks and smiles, and the gold tooth shines again.

As he walks, he glances from corner to corner,
Not a soul is seen, the entire avenue is deserted,
When suddenly that woman comes out of the doorway,
And Pedro Navaja clenches a fist inside his coat.

He looks one way, he looks the other, and sees no one,
And running, but silently, he crosses the street,
And meanwhile, on the other sidewalk, that woman walks,
Grumbling, because she didn't make any money to eat.

As she walks, she takes a revolver from her old coat,
She was going to put it in her purse so it wouldn't get in the way,
A .38 Smith & Wesson Special,
That she carries to keep her safe from all harm.

And Pedro Navaja, knife in hand, went for her,
The gold tooth illuminated the entire avenue, it was easy!
As he laughed, he plunged the knife without compassion,
When suddenly a shot rang out like a cannon.

And Pedro Navaja fell on the sidewalk as he saw,
That woman, revolver in hand and mortally wounded, said to him,
"I thought today wasn't my day, I'm out of luck,"
"But Pedro Navaja, you're worse off, you're done for."

And believe me, folks, although there was noise, nobody came out,
There were no onlookers, no questions, nobody cried,
Only a drunk stumbled upon the two dead,
He took the revolver, the knife, two pesos, and left.

And stumbling, he went off singing out of tune,
