Venci as febres do mato e o veneno das cobras
Cativo levei mau trato, paguei pelas minhas obras
Das gentes tornei-me amigo com artes que já nem sei
E ao fim de muitos meses era visita dum rei
Fiz-me amante de gentia com ela juntei fazenda
A vida até já sorria feliz era a minha emenda

E o batel chegou um dia para saber se eu era vivo
E nas areias da baía foi um encontro festivo
Regressei a Portugal com ideia de ficar
E ao infante contei tudo do que pudera indagar
E tal foi o meu sucesso que el-rei me deu perdão
Mas mandou-me de regresso e eu não pude dizer não

I committed a crime of love I was sentenced to death
But before the scaffold I was summoned to a captain
Who was leaving for Guinea and promised me pardon
If I went in a galley and accepted the mission
Of being cast into the wilderness of the Gentiles by luck
Alone and abandoned for months on end

Between hell and the executioner, my sad fate danced
I weighed the cons and the pros and chose to be cast
And so I was taken on board to the coast of Guinea
And on land I was left with biscuit, fear, and faith
With orders to have intercourse with all creatures
To learn about the sources of gold and to know these cultures

I was thrown to the wild beasts
The forest was my home
There was no spring or autumn
And it was always a blazing summer

I overcame the fevers of the forest and the venom of cobras
As a captive I was mistreated, I paid for my deeds
I became a friend of the people with arts that I no longer know
And after many months I was a visitor to a king
I became a lover of a gentile woman and with her I amassed wealth
Life even smiled on me, happy was my amendment

And the ship arrived one day to see if I was alive
And on the sands of the bay it was a festive meeting
I returned to Portugal with the idea of staying
And to the prince I told everything that I could find out
And such was my success that the king forgave me
But he sent me back and I could not say no

The Lord Prince sent me in company with an abbot
Who baptized all the people and increased Christianity
“What a good harvest of souls!” said the pope with contentment
Seeing the wounds of Christ taking over the map
And in return for my services there I was made steward
And that is all that I went through just for a crime of love
