薄荷(はっか)パイプは 父さんに
小さな金魚は 母さんに
ごきげんなおった 姉さんと
からころ並べる げたの音

The Festival in Early Summer

My heart beats with excitement at the sound of the flute and drums,
In a new summer kimono (yukata) and scarlet geta sandals,
I walk with airs, trying to imitate my older sister,
But in the swirling crowd, I quickly lose sight of her.
A ten-yen treasure, A ruby ring,
A lost soul in a world of dreams, The festival in early summer, when I was seven.

My sleeves get wet during the goldfish scooping game,
The acetylene lights casting dancing shadows,
A wave of fear washes over me as I realize I'm alone.
The fireworks have ended, Darkness descends,
Through tear-filled eyes, I see my sister's face,
A crow laughs at my tears, The festival in early summer, when I was seven.

A peppermint pipe for my father,
A tiny goldfish for my mother,
My sister is happy again,
Our geta making a cheerful rhythm as we walk,
I take a deep breath, Inhaling the starry night sky,
Tonight's dream will surely be, Of an endless summer festival.
