川のめだかが 夢見る頃は
ほ ほ ほたるが 灯をともす

そよぐ柳に 螢がゆれて
山の三日月 かくれる頃は
ほ ほ ほたるが 飛んで出る

川原のおもは 五月(さつき)のやみ夜
かなたこなたに 友よび集(つど)い
むれて螢の 大まり小まり

Firefly

As the willows cast a hazy silhouette, and twilight descends,
When the minnows in the river dream,
Fireflies flicker their lights.

The river breeze whispers through the willows,
Fireflies dance amidst their swaying branches,
As the crescent moon sets in the mountains,
Fireflies emerge and take flight.

On the riverbank, under the soft glow of May,
They gather and call to each other,
Great swarms and tiny clusters of fireflies,
Darting through the night sky.
