Under the canopy of a towering coconut palm,
we sought shelter from the rain.
The sea, unusually tempestuous,
I scanned out of the corner of my eye.
Though resolved to return home with my skin toasted,—
a leaden bank of clouds, vexing in its persistence,
the rain at Kaanapali, accompanying the
ferocious dance of the waves.

The watch I had forgotten to cast aside
at poolside
I hastily chucked into the pool.

“since we’re wet anyway, let’s take a dip with our clothes on.”
