Black Eagle

A white eagle with no talons wanders the vast expanse of the sky
Tiny birds and beasts, pallid with fear, scatter in its wake
The white eagle spreads its wings and sings
I can see to the very ends of this great sky

As I soar, I ponder. Am I truly free?
Could I fly high enough to reach the sun?
Higher, ever higher, until my body burns
Then, before my very eyes, a fiery red orb draws near

Suddenly, I am a black-winged bird, adrift upon a cerulean sea
My strength to fly has vanished, and I yield to the waves
My body gently sways, its form dissolving
Yet still, I yearn for those black wings, however imperfect
