Lai atbalstītu sabiedrotos (Angliju un Franciju),
Krievu 12.armija 1916.gada martā gatavoja uzbrukumu.
Latviešu bataljoni devās kaujā kopā ar krievu daļām uz
Atklāta lauka pie Ķekavas.
Ir 1916.gada marts
Uz Ķekavas pozīcijām, kur Rīgas - Bauskas ceļš
Pa sniega un dubļu pilnām stigām
Brien latvju strēlniekbataljoni
Tiem priekšā stāv nikna kauja
Kur daudzi pirmoreiz ies ugunī
Bet Rīgas pašpuikas jau paši cīņā raujas
Jo droši tic, ka ienaidnieku dzīs
No augstiem cara ģenerāļiem lemts
Ar sibīriešu pulkiem kopā
Tur galvenajā triecienjonī ies
2.Rīgas un 1.Daugavgrīvas bataljons
Jau 20. marta naktī
Tie ieņem vietas pirmās tranšejās
Laiks paiet satraukuma pilnās gaidās
Stāvot dubļos vai guļot slapjās granātbedrēs
Līdz beidzot pussešos rītā
Ierūcas krievu lielgabali pirmie
Un sākas viesuļuguns
Šauj 92 stobri un vācu pozīcijas
Vārās tā kā katlā
Tad kaujā dodas sibīrieši
Un noskan pavēle: "Latvieši, uz priekšu!"
Jau ienaidnieku fronte pušu rauta
Un daudzi skaļu "Urā!" sauc
Bet tālāk strēlnieki vairs netiek
Sāk vācu ložmetēji viņu rindas jaukt
Un arī atpakaļ vairs ceļa nava
No artilērijas tur ugunssiena celta
To sibīrieši neiztur - tie bēg
Un vāci viņus līķu vālos slauka
Bet latvieši vēl turas!
Un tikai tumsā atpakaļ lien dzīvajie
Un ievainotie ilgi vaid uz lauka
No augstiem ģenerāļiem bija lemts
Tur daudziem palikt marta granātlaukā

The March Of 1916

To support the allies (England and France),
The Russian 12th Army was preparing an offensive in March, 1916.
Latvian battalions went into battle together with Russian units in
Open field at Ķekava.
It is March 1916
To Ķekava positions, where Riga - Bauska road
Through paths full of snow and mud
Latvian rifle battalions wade
A fierce battle awaits them
Where many will go into fire for the first time
But Riga youngsters are already drawn into the fight
Because they firmly believe that they will drive the enemy
It was decided by the high Tsarist generals
Together with the Siberian regiments
There in the main attack will go
2nd Riga and 1st Daugavgrīva battalions
Already on the night of March 20th
They take their places in the first trenches
Time passes in anxious waiting
Standing in the mud or lying in wet shell holes
Until finally at half past six in the morning
Russian cannons roar first
And the firefight begins
92 barrels fire and German positions
Boil like a pot
Then the Siberians go into battle
And the order sounds: "Latvians, forward!"
Already the enemy front is torn in half
And many shout a loud "Urā!"
But the shooters can't go any further
German machine guns begin to confuse their ranks
And there is no way back either
An artillery wall of fire has been erected there
The Siberians can't stand it - they run away
And the Germans sweep them into the valleys of the dead
But the Latvians are still holding on!
And only in the dark do the survivors crawl back
And the wounded moan on the field for a long time
It was decided by the high generals
Many will remain in the March shell field
