Hanuman Chalisa - English Translation

Doha (Couplet)
My intellect has blossomed, by the dust of my Guru's lotus feet,
I sing the pure fame of Raghubar (Lord Rama), which bestows the four fruits of life.
With a dull witted body and mind, I meditate on Pavan Kumar (Hanuman),
Grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and remove my sorrows and blemishes.
Chaupaii (Quatrain)
Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue,
Victory to the Lord of monkeys, who illuminates the three worlds.
Messenger of Rama, with unmatched strength and splendor,
Son of Anjani, known as Pavan Sut (son of the wind god).
Mighty hero, with a body like lightning (Bajrang),
Destroyer of bad intellect, companion of good intellect.
With a golden complexion, adorned with the finest attire,
Wearing earrings and with curly hair.
Holding a mace (vajra) and a flag in your hands,
With a sacred thread (janeu) of Munja grass adorning your shoulder.
Son of Kesari, a descendant of Lord Shiva,
Your glory and splendor are revered by the whole world.
Wise, intelligent and extremely clever,
Eager to carry out Lord Rama's tasks.
Devoted to listening to the Lord's stories,
Rama, Lakshmana and Sita reside in your heart.
Taking a subtle form, you appeared before Sita,
And assuming a gigantic form, you burned Lanka.
Taking a fierce form, you killed demons,
And perfectly completed Lord Rama's tasks.
Bringing the Sanjeevani herb, you revived Lakshmana,
And brought immense joy to Shri Raghuveer (Lord Rama).
Raghupati (Lord Rama) greatly praised you,
Saying, "You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat."
Thousands of mouths sing your glories,
Saying this, Shri Rama embraced you.
The creator Brahma and other sages,
Narada, Saraswati and the gods (Aheesas).
Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the directions,
Even the poets and scholars cannot describe your greatness.
You did a great favor for Sugriva,
By uniting him with Rama and giving him his kingdom.
Vibhishana accepted your advice,
And became the king of Lanka, known to the whole world.
The sun, which is thousands of miles away,
You playfully swallowed, thinking it to be a sweet fruit.
With the Lord's ring in your mouth,
You crossed the ocean, which is no surprise.
You conquer the impossible tasks of the world,
By your grace, everything becomes easy.
You are the guardian at Rama's door,
Without your permission, no one can enter.
All comforts are attained by seeking your refuge,
With you as protector, whom should I fear?
You can control your own immense power,
The three worlds tremble at your roar.
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near,
When the name of Mahavir (Hanuman) is uttered.
Diseases are eradicated and all pains vanish,
By continuously chanting the name of Hanuman, the brave.
Hanuman frees us from all troubles,
Whoever focuses their mind, actions, words and thoughts on him.
Lord Rama, the ascetic king, is supreme over all,
You fulfill all his tasks.
Whoever makes any wish with devotion,
They attain the imperishable fruit of life.
Your glory shines through the four ages,
And is renowned throughout the illuminated world.
You are the protector of saints and sages,
Destroyer of demons, beloved of Lord Rama.
Giver of the eight supernatural powers and nine treasures,
Mother Janaki (Sita) bestowed these boons upon you.
You possess the elixir of Rama's name,
Always remain the servant of Raghupati (Lord Rama).
Through your devotion, one attains Lord Rama,
And forgets the sorrows of countless lifetimes.
At the end of life, one reaches the abode of Raghuveer,
And is born as a devotee of Hari (Lord Vishnu).
One need not worship any other deity,
Hanuman alone brings all happiness.
Troubles vanish and all pains are eradicated,
By remembering Hanuman, the powerful and brave.
Victory, victory, victory to Hanuman, the Lord,
Please grant your grace, as my divine Guru.
Whoever recites this a hundred times,
Is freed from bondage and attains great happiness.
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa,
Attains success, as witnessed by Lord Shiva.
Tulsidas, forever the servant of Hari (Lord Vishnu),
O Lord, please reside in my heart.

Son of the wind god, remover of difficulties, with an auspicious form,
Along with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, reside in my heart, O valiant king.
