مرة صحيت مالنوم على فرع الشجرة

فوقعت من ظهرها جوا البلاعة
وشميت في الظلمة روايح كل بشاعة
قلت أنوّر طريقي بالولاعة
وقبل ماشوف الضيّ بقيت الحشرة

حشرة مش تقفيل مصري، لأ صيني
بتغرق في المجاري، اسمع وجاريني
دي كل مرة تعافر توصل برّ أمان
تتهان، تنداس، تتفعص مالراس
تتقفش تتخلع تتدشدش تتقلع
تتربط تتيتّم تتزبّط تتولع
تتشاط تنداس تتفعص مالراس

وقبل ماروحها تروح يقولوا خلاص
ييجي شروق يكنسها أو زبّال

El Ballaat

One time I woke up from a sleep on a tree branch
And when I woke up from a sleep on a rainy spot
I found myself waking up from a sleep on the back of a cow
And the cow kept mooing and saying, "Oh, my children"
And the children of misfortune still held onto misfortune

So I fell from her back into the sewer
And I smelled every disgusting thing in the darkness
I said I will light my way with a lighter
And before I saw the light, I became an insect

An insect, not a typical Egyptian thing, but a Chinese thing
Drowning in the sewers, listen and join me
Every time it struggles to reach safety
It is trampled, crushed, and squashed from the head
It is thrown up, it is pulled, it is shoved, it is peeled
It is bound, it is orphaned, it is fixed, it is set alight
It is broken, it is crushed, it is squashed from the head

And before it goes, they say it is finished
A sunrise will sweep it away or a garbage man
It becomes an insect in its sewers or a stream
And the cow returns to call out to you and to them
