Korttipakka

Tämä on vanha tarina
Kerran sota-aikana tapahtui näin
Oli oltu pitkällä marssilla ja komppania oli tullut pieneen kaupunkiin
Seuraava päivä oli sunnuntai ja vääpeli komensi pojat kirkkoon
Kun pappi luki rukouksen, niin ne, joilla oli rukouskirja, ottivat sen esiin

Näin sanoen sotamies aloitti kertomuksensa:

"Katsokaas, herra sotatuomari, kun näen ässän, muistan, että on vain yksi Jumala
Kakkosesta muistan, että Raamatussa on kaksi osaa, Vanha ja Uusi Testamentti
Kun näen kolmosen, ajattelen Isää, Poikaa ja Pyhää Henkeä
Kun näen nelosen, tulevat mieleeni neljä Evankelistaa: Matteus, Markus, Luukas ja Johannes
Kun näen viitosen, ajattelen viittä viisasta neitsyttä, jotka laittoivat lamppunsa kuntoon

The Deck of Cards

This is an old story, my dear,
something that happened during the war.
A company had been on a long march and arrived in a small town.
The next day was Sunday, and the sergeant ordered the men to church.
When the priest began the prayer, those with prayer books took them out.

But one soldier only had a deck of cards,
which he spread out in front of him on the church pew.
The sergeant noticed the cards and said, "Soldier! Put those cards away!"
After the church service, the soldier was arrested and taken to a court-martial.

"Explain your actions," the judge demanded, "or I will punish you more severely than anyone ever before!"
The soldier replied, "Sir, I have been marching for almost a week,
and I have neither a Bible nor a prayer book.
But I hope you will understand my sincere explanation."
With that, the soldier began his story:

"You see, sir, when I see the ace, it reminds me that there is only one God.
The deuce reminds me that the Bible has two parts, the Old and New Testaments.
When I see the three, I think of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
When I see the four, I am reminded of the four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
When I see the five, I think of the five wise virgins who prepared their lamps.
There were ten in total; five wise ones who were saved, and five foolish ones who were shut out.

When I see the six, it reminds me that in six days God created the heavens and the earth.
When I see the seven, I remember that on the seventh day God rested.
And when I see the eight, I think of the eight righteous people whom God saved from the flood.
They were Noah, his wife, their sons, and their sons' wives.
When I see the nine, I think of the lepers whom our Savior cleansed of their ailments.
Nine out of ten didn't even thank him for it.
When I see the ten, I think of the ten commandments that God gave to Moses on tablets of stone.

When I see the king, I remember that there is only one King of the Kingdom of Heaven, God Almighty.
And when I see the queen, I think of the Virgin Mary, who is the Queen of the Kingdom of Heaven.
The jack is the devil.

When I add up the points in the deck, I get 364,
just one less than the number of days in a year.
There are 52 cards,
the same as the number of weeks in a year.
There are four suits, the same as the number of weeks in a month.
There are 12 face cards, the same as the number of months in a year.
Each suit has 13 cards, the same as the number of weeks in a quarter.

As you can see, sir, the deck of cards is my Bible, almanac, and prayer book.

And that, my dear, is a true story!
