Okrenut morskoj pučini
Sveđ ko′ vječiti stražar
Osamljen kralj na strmini

Krunom dodiruje oblak
Vodu iz kamena pije
Odjednom je bilo crveno
Ko', kad se zora rodi
Poslije je prašina crna
Letjela prema vodi
Nema ga više, zelenog kralja
Čempresa moga, nema ga više
Ranjena stijena još pamti druga
Sjećanje njeno isprat će kiše
Galeb je kriknuo – bol
Kada se razlio plamen
Umjesto zelenog kralja
Sad samo – crni kamen
Valovi tuku o stijene
Tiho, tiho, sve tiše
Dozivlju zelenog kralja
Ma njega nema više

Ballad of the Green King

Tall and luxuriously green,
Turned to the deep sea,
Forever a faithful sentinel,
The lonely king on the cliff.
I watched it grow,
Laughing at the winds,
Its crown touching the clouds,
Drinking water from stones.
Suddenly it was red,
Like the birth of dawn,
Then black dust flew
Towards the water.
The green king is no more,
My cypress, it is no more.
The wounded rock still remembers its friend,
The rains will escort its memory.
A seagull cried out in pain,
When the flames spread,
Instead of the green king,
Now just a black stone.
Waves beat against the cliffs,
Silently, silently, ever more so.
Echoing the green king,
But it is no more.
