Hôm nay tôi trở về thăm trường cũ
Nhiều nét đổi thay tường mái rêu mờ
Bên hiên hằng giờ tìm những bạn xưa
May ra có còn đôi đứa
Vẫn yên vui sống đời học trò.

Bâng khuâng đợi chờ người sao chẳng đến?
Hỏi lá hỏi hoa chỉ thấy im lìm
Cây dương đầu trường còn khắc hàng tên
Hoa leo phũ phàng đan kín
Tiếng ve ru nghe gợi buồn thêm .

Bạn cũ xa rồi, có người về đất buông xuôi
Năm ba đứa bạt phương trời
Hai thằng chờ đầu quân năm tới.

Ve ơi, hát gì điệu nhạc lâm ly
Khóc người biền biệt sơn khê
Cố nhân đi bao giờ mới về?

Old School, Old Love

Today I returned to visit my old school
Many changes have taken place, the walls and roofs are covered in moss
I search for my old friends on the porch for hours
Maybe a few of them still remain
And still live happily as students.

I wait in vain, why doesn’t anyone come?
I ask the leaves, I ask the flowers, only silence answers
The poplar tree at the head of the school still has our names carved on it
The creeping vine has cruelly covered everything
The cicada’s song makes me even sadder.

My old friends are gone, some have passed away
Three or four have gone to distant lands
Two of them are waiting to join the army next year.

Cicada, what kind of sorrowful melody are you singing?
You mourn for those who are far away
When will my old friends return?

Today I returned and saw many new faces
The teachers are still here, but where are my friends?
So many memories of the days of youth, flowers and butterflies
Echo in my longing
Does anyone miss and long for our old school?
