The Sick Note (Murphy and the Bricks)

Dear Sir, I write this note to you to tell you of me plight
and at the time of writing, I am not a pretty sight;
me body is all black and blue, me face a deathly gray
and I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work today.
While working on the fourteenth floor some bricks I had to clear;
now, to throw them down from such a height was not a good idea.
the foreman wasn't very pleased, he beeing an awkward sod
he said I'd have to cart them down the ladders in me hod.
Now, clearing all these bricks by hand it was so very slow,
so I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below.
But in me haste to do the job I was to blind to see
that a barrelful of building bricks was heavier than me.
So when I untied the rope the barrel fell like lead
and clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead.
Well, I shot up like a rocket till to my dismay I found
that halfway up I met the bloody barrel comming down.
Well, the barrel broke me shoulder as to the ground it sped,
and when I reached the top I banged the pully with my head.
Well, I clung on tight through numbed shock from this almighty blow
and the barrel spilled out half the bricks fourteen floors below.
Now, when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor
I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more;
still clinging tightly to the rope, I sped towards the ground,
and I landed on the brocken bricks that were all scattered round.
Well, I lay there groaning on the ground, I thougth I'd passed the worst,
when the barrel hit the pully-wheel and then the bottom burst.
Well, a shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope
as I lay there moaning on the ground, I let go of the bloody rope.
The barrel than being heavier, it started down once more,
and landed right across me, as I lay upon the floor.
Well, it broke three ribs and my left arm and I can only say
that I hope you'll understand why Paddy's not a work today

Ma chère, je t'écris cette lettre pour te parler de mon sort
et au moment où je t'écris, je ne suis pas un beau spectacle ;
mon corps est tout meurtri, mon visage d'un gris mortel
et je t'écris pour t'expliquer pourquoi Paddy n'est pas au travail aujourd'hui.
Alors que je travaillais au quatorzième étage, j'avais des briques à enlever ;
maintenant, les jeter du haut d'une telle hauteur n'était pas une bonne idée.
Le contremaître n'était pas très content, étant un type têtu
il a dit que je devais les transporter en bas par les échelles dans ma brouette.
Maintenant, enlever toutes ces briques à la main, c'était tellement lent,
j'ai donc hissé un baril et fixé la corde en dessous.
Mais dans ma hâte de faire le travail, j'étais aveugle
qu'un baril plein de briques de construction était plus lourd que moi.
Donc, quand j'ai délié la corde, le baril est tombé comme du plomb
et en me tenant fermement à la corde, j'ai commencé à monter.
Eh bien, j'ai décollé comme une fusée jusqu'à ce que, à mon grand désespoir, je trouve
qu'à mi-chemin, j'ai rencontré le foutu baril qui descendait.
Eh bien, le baril m'a cassé l'épaule alors qu'il fonçait vers le sol,
et quand j'ai atteint le sommet, j'ai cogné la poulie avec ma tête.
Eh bien, je me suis accroché fermement malgré le choc engourdissant de ce coup terrible
et le baril a renversé la moitié des briques quatorzes étages plus bas.
Maintenant, quand ces briques sont tombées du baril sur le sol
je pesais alors plus lourd que le baril et j'ai recommencé à descendre ;
toujours accroché fermement à la corde, j'ai filé vers le sol,
et j'ai atterri sur les briques brisées qui étaient éparpillées partout.
Eh bien, j'étais allongé là, gémissant sur le sol, je pensais que le pire était passé,
quand le baril a frappé la poulie et que le fond a explosé.
Eh bien, une pluie de briques s'est abattue sur moi, je n'avais aucune chance
alors que j'étais allongé là à gémir sur le sol, j'ai lâché la foutue corde.
Le baril étant alors plus lourd, il a recommencé à descendre,
et s'est écrasé sur moi, alors que j'étais allongé sur le sol.
Eh bien, il m'a cassé trois côtes et mon bras gauche, et je ne peux que dire
que j'espère que tu comprendras pourquoi Paddy n'est pas au travail aujourd'hui
