Ignorance

I was woken up in the early morning, after my flight
By a sound I could not grasp, I did not recognize
Running like water, two toned, and tangled
Like a briar holding many sounds, all at once

"It was a magpie", you told me as you handed me a coffee
The black and white bird you see in city parks
And you pointed out the window, looking straight in at me
A black and white bird sitting on the fence

I thought about the man who called it a magpie
Confronted by the great expanse of his ignorance
He wanted to name it, to detain it forever in that small phrase
It seemed like a shame to give it a name

But then again, I don't understand anything the way I'm supposed to
I drag every river for meaning, scrape my hand on every ceiling
I never know what to say or not say
What to honour or betray in any given day

But I never got used to the sound of the magpie
It set my skin on edge, called like a child
Like a dog, like the wind caught in a fence
When we talked, it interrupted
And I would never know what it meant

Ignorance

Je me suis réveillée tôt le matin, après mon vol
Par un son que je ne pouvais pas saisir, que je ne reconnaissais pas
Courir comme de l'eau, bicolore et emmêlé
Comme une ronce qui retient de nombreux sons, tous en même temps

"C'était une pie", tu m'as dit en me tendant un café
L'oiseau noir et blanc que tu vois dans les parcs de la ville
Et tu as pointé du doigt la fenêtre, me regardant droit dans les yeux
Un oiseau noir et blanc assis sur la clôture

J'ai pensé à l'homme qui l'a appelé une pie
Confronté à la grande étendue de son ignorance
Il voulait lui donner un nom, la retenir à jamais dans cette petite phrase
Il semblait dommage de lui donner un nom

Mais d'un autre côté, je ne comprends rien comme je suis censée le faire
Je traîne chaque rivière à la recherche de sens, je me gratte la main sur chaque plafond
Je ne sais jamais quoi dire ou ne pas dire
Ce qu'il faut honorer ou trahir un jour donné

Mais je ne me suis jamais habituée au son de la pie
Ça me mettait la peau sur les nerfs, ça criait comme un enfant
Comme un chien, comme le vent pris dans une clôture
Quand on parlait, ça interrompait
Et je ne saurais jamais ce que ça voulait dire
