Wenn als Kind ich aus dem Fenster sah
Da war der Himmel gar nicht nah

Wer hätt' je gedacht
Was die Arbeit schafft

Dennoch verzagten sie nicht!
Schöner Stund' um Stunde
Ruf von Mund zu Munde:
"Bauen wir eine neue Welt
So wie sie uns gefällt!"

The panes were covered in coal dust and dirt
And smoking chimneys, like giant trees
Black Forest of my dreams!

Who would have thought
What work can create
Bridges and houses and light
Ruins gray in gray
Without a blue of hope
Yet they did not despair!
Beautiful hour by hour
Call from mouth to mouth:
"Let's build a new world
Just as we like it!"

When I looked out the window as a child

Today I stop
I have to see in amazement:
Ruins and coal are gone!
Everyone is running fast
Children laugh out loud
Dirt and dust are in hiding!
Time for me to dare too
To build my world
In the great children's game
I'll do what I want too!
