Une nchanson, qui a été faite
Sur la vérité.
En mille huit cent soixante et neuf,
Lorsqu′un chaland
Fut englouti dans l'Saint Maurice
Par accident.

Neuf octobre, de Mékinac
Part un chaland,
Chargé de monde et de bagages
Trop lourdement;
Le radeau a versé dans le fleuve
à Pointe à Château,
Nous voyons là nos camarades
Au fil de l′eau.

Trente six hommes sont à la nage
En chavirant,
Parmi chevaux et bagages,
Charges du chaland;
Boyd le propriétaire se noye,
Et ses deux fils,
Des gens bien connus par ici
Et de nos amis.

Malheureux le gouverneur
De ce chaland là,
Qui règne sur la liste des hommes
Depuis trop longtemps;
Je n'dirais pas son caractère,
Même pas son nom,
L'arsenic la corde attendent cette brute
Assurément.

Qui l′a composé et faite
Et me l′a chantée?

The Wreck of Jim Boyd's Barge

Come closer, ladies and gentlemen,
I'm going to sing you
A song that was made
On the truth.
In eighteen sixty-nine,
When a barge
Was swallowed up in the Saint Maurice
By accident.

On October ninth, from Mekinac
Departs a barge,
Heavily laden with people and baggage,
Too heavily;
The raft capsizes in the river
at Pointe à Château,
We see our comrades there
In the water.

Thirty-six men are swimming
As it capsizes,
Among horses and baggage,
Laden in the barge;
Boyd the owner drowns,
And his two sons,
People well known here,
And our friends.

Unfortunate is the captain
Of this barge,
Who's been in charge of a list of men
For too long;
I wouldn't speak of his character,
Nor his name,
Arsenic or the noose awaits this brute
For sure.

So who wrote this little song?
I'll tell you her name;
Who composed it and wrote it
And sang it to me?
Madame Honorée Cadorette,
My grandmother,
There are still
Descendants of hers in our parishes.
