Wild Boy

As a wild boy on sled o'er Pyhäjärvi's ice did fly,
The Devil sat and sang perched on the runner, riding high,
And iron on his feet left scars upon the frozen ground,
And his wild singing surely carried for five leagues around.
A comely lass, for husband, sought a man of worth and name,
But what chance had a drunkard, a wild boy, in this game?

A grand wedding was celebrated, and church bells sweetly rang,
And hymns of pious folk resounded where the forest sang,
The wild boy took a drink and wiped his lips upon his sleeve,
And on his black horse rode up to the old church square at eve.
Disappointment, bitter, cut him like a knife,
It shone as clear and sharp as steel beneath the sun's bright life.

The priest pronounced the final words as the wild boy drew near,
And the groom fell to the altar, blood seeping through his gear,
In irons he was bound and taken by the king's decree,
His mother pleaded, but in vain, for mercy's clemency.
The wild boy was not seen again after that fateful day,
To Vaasa Castle he was sent, the Devil sang upon the sleigh.
