श्रीबादरायणिरुवाच ||
Sri Badarayani said ||
Having thus resolved with his intellect and fixed his mind within his heart,
He chanted the supreme chant, learned in a previous birth. ||
श्रीगजेन्द्र उवाच ||
Sri Gajendra said ||
Om, I bow to that Bhagavan, from whom this conscious Self has come,
पुरुषायादिबीजाय परेशायाभिधीमहि ||
To the primal seed of Purusha, the Supreme Lord, we offer praise. ||
In whom this exists, from whom this is, by whom this is, who is this itself,
He who is beyond both this and that, to that self-manifested one I surrender. ||
He who, in his own Self, has placed this, his own maya, sometimes manifest, sometimes concealed,
He who with unblinking vision beholds both, may that Self-rooted one, the Supreme beyond the supreme, protect me. ||
When all beings, worlds, and even the protectors and all causes had perished by time,
There was then a deep and profound darkness, beyond which shines the Lord. ||
Whose state even the gods and sages do not know, then who else is worthy to reach or speak of it,
Like the movements of a dancer through his various forms, He is difficult to trace, may He protect me. ||
Those who desire to see His auspicious state, the liberated sages, truly virtuous,
Wander in the forest, observing the vow of non-violence, free from attachment, becoming one with the Self, benevolent, He is my refuge. ||
He who has neither birth nor action, nor name, form, qualities, or faults,
Yet for the sake of the appearance of the world's creation and dissolution, He accepts these through his maya in due course. ||
To Him, the Supreme Lord, Brahman, of infinite power, I bow,
To the formless, yet having form, I bow to the doer of wondrous deeds. ||
I bow to the Self-illuminated one, the witness, the Supreme Self,
I bow to Him who is beyond speech, mind, and even consciousness. ||
To Him who is attained through purity, to the wise through non-action,
I bow to the Lord of liberation, the bliss of Nirvana consciousness. ||
I bow to the peaceful, the fierce, the ignorant, the one possessing qualities,
To the undifferentiated, the balanced, I bow to the embodiment of knowledge. ||
I bow to you, the knower of the field, the overseer of all, the witness,
To Purusha, the root of the Self, I bow to the root of Prakriti. ||
To the perceiver of all sense qualities, the cause of all experiences,
To the one described as the shadow of the unreal, the ever-shining one, I bow. ||
I bow again and again to you, the cause of all, the causeless, the wondrous cause,
To the great ocean of all Agamas and scriptures, I bow to the ultimate goal of liberation. ||
You are the fire of consciousness hidden within the fuel of the gunas, the blazing flame of its agitation,
Unattached by the state of non-action, self-luminous, I offer my salutations. ||
To you who liberates the bound souls who surrender like me, the liberated one, the infinitely compassionate, I bow to the abode,
To the witness within, known in the minds of all embodied beings through your own portion, to the Bhagavan, the Great One, I bow. ||
To the one difficult to attain by those attached to righteousness, desire, wealth, home, wife, and people, free from the association of gunas,
To the Self-liberated one, realized within the hearts of the liberated, to the Self of knowledge, Bhagavan, I bow to Ishvara. ||
Those who, desiring liberation from righteousness, desire, and wealth, worship Him, attain their desired state,
What more blessings, may He grant me a body free from disease, even for a night, and liberation from fear. ||
Those who are solitary, desiring nothing, who have surrendered to Bhagavan,
Sing of His most wondrous and auspicious deeds, immersed in the ocean of bliss. ||
I worship that imperishable Brahman, the Supreme, the Lord of lords, the unmanifest, attainable through spiritual yoga,
Beyond the senses, subtle as if far away, infinite, the beginning, the complete. ||
From whom Brahma and other gods, Vedas, worlds, moving and non-moving,
Are created through the differentiation of name and form, like sparks from fire. ||
As sparks of fire, rays of the sun, repeatedly emerge and merge back into their source of light,
So too, from Him arises this flow of gunas, intellect, mind, senses, and bodily forms. ||
He is neither god, demon, mortal, animal, woman, eunuch, man, nor any being,
He is not a guna, karma, nor being nor non-being, the remainder of negation, victorious over all. ||
I do not wish to live here or hereafter, for what is the use of this mutual covering within and without,
I desire liberation from the veil of the self and the world, which is not subject to the ravages of time. ||
I, who am the creator of the universe, the non-universe, the knower of the universe,
Bow to Brahman, the Self of the universe, the unborn, the Supreme state. ||
The Yogis, whose actions are destroyed by Yoga, whose hearts are illumined by Yoga,
Behold the Lord of Yoga within, to Him I bow. ||
I bow again and again to you, of irresistible speed, the threefold power, the intelligence of all minds,
The protector of those who surrender, of insurmountable power, the unattainable path for the senses. ||
This mind does not know its own Self, by whose power it is struck down by ego,
To that Bhagavan of insurmountable greatness, I surrender. ||
श्रीशुक उवाच ||
Sri Suka said ||
Thus Gajendra described the undifferentiated,
While Brahma and others, with their pride in various distinctions,
Did not approach, due to His all-encompassing nature,
तत्राखिलामरमयो हरिराविरासीत ||
Then Hari, the Lord of all immortals, appeared there. ||
Seeing him distressed, the abode of the universe,
Hearing his hymn, praised by the celestial beings,
Carried by Garuda, the embodiment of the Vedas,
The wielder of the discus swiftly approached where Gajendra was. ||
He, seized by the crocodile within the lake, tormented,
Seeing Garuda and Hari, holding the discus,
Raising his trunk, spoke with difficulty,
नारायणाखिलगुरो भगवन्नमस्ते ||
Narayana, the teacher of all, Bhagavan, I bow to you. ||
Seeing him afflicted, the unborn one swiftly descended,
And quickly pulled him out of the lake with compassion,
From the crocodile's torn mouth, by Hari, Gajendra,
संपश्यतां हरिरमूमुचदुच्छ्रियाणाम ||
Was released, as all beings witnessed and rejoiced. ||
