The word "love" is a cause for mockery here

Once upon a time, I gazed into the blue sky
And the meadows full of violets, the sun rained gold
And the world shone like gold
The Earth seemed like a vast treasure
And the firmament served as its casket

From the earth to my brow
There came a living caress, a kiss
Overcome with love, I cried

I love you, you who kiss me, divinely beautiful
O my country

And I wanted to pray, full of love
I crossed the threshold of a church
There a priest collected gifts in the niches of the saints
And the Virgin

And in vain a trembling old man asked for bread
And in vain he stretched out his hand to a deaf ear
I crossed the threshold of the cottages
A man slandered them, blaspheming the ground

That the treasury barely satisfies
And he hurled at God
And against men
The tears of the children

In such misery, what does the patrician brood do?
Only your eye expresses here, humanely
A look of pity

O beautiful maiden
Do not despise the words of a poet
