Warum lässt du da fliegen
Vielleicht die letzte Gelegenheit,

Weil er jung ist und so schön.
Soll er fliegen weit in die Welt,
Dass kein Ring ihn drückt oder hält!'

'Go, and catch that bird.'

Why do you let it fly there
Perhaps the last opportunity,
But I didn't catch it.
'Mother,' I say, 'precisely for that reason,
Because it's young and beautiful.
Let it fly far into the world,
So that no ring weighs it down or holds it!'
That's why I won't catch it.

That it may first explore
All ten thousand winds!

So that its wings don't atrophy
In such confinements.
