Grey threads now strike upon the golden loom of life
In vain, oh in vain do I cling onto the moment
Pleasant company and wine no longer bring solace

The days of my proud will fade away behind me
The enchantments of my spirit long since left behind
I rose from the ravine
Must my path now descend once more?
My only hope, a brief moment without pain

I know that peace is granted me in the earth
Gentle rest is not created for the seeker's path
The north wind speaks, the sun sinks into the storm
A red streak of ice, the impotent longing for beauty

My dreams of flowering hills have sunk into the sea
I am a poor man, the songs' ransom is dear
I gave my all, for a moment I swayed
I paid for the gold of dreams with the sorrow of my mind

I am exhausted, ah, to the very roots of my heart!
Perhaps the weight of the burden was too much to bear?
Or am I one of those who has the will, but not the strength?
My victory was empty, the result of my labor mocks me

Hopeless battle against the powers of heaven
The harp echoes comfort, the song does not cradle its child
The hoarfrost challenges, the melody plays with failing wings
I creep into the peace of my ravine like a dying beast
