Pojat juoksivat notkein säärin
Yli pallokentän sen
Eräs seisoi hievahtamatta
Eräs raajarikkoinen

Vaan hänkään totisesti
Ei muistanut sauvojaan
Oli haltioitunut hehku
Hänen kalpeilla kasvoillaan

Ilost', innosta värähtelevän

On a playing field

On the outskirts of this playing field
A crippled boy
Had stopped under that
Massive elm tree

He stood there on the grass
Leaning on his crutches
He watched the game
With feverish eyes

Over the sunlit sand
Which the elm tree shaded
Many a joyous cry travelled
Many a hearty laugh rang out

The boys ran with nimble legs
Across that playing field
One stood motionless
One crippled

But neither did he truly
Remember his crutches
He was ecstatic
His face pale

From joy, and his nostrils flared
I saw
Every time the bat hit the ball
And the ball flew high

From behind the boundary line
Whenever anyone dared run out
It was as if the boy under the elm
Had also run out

As if the boy's soul had left
His crippled body
And he had run in the contest
With the others, joyously

He took a step
But as if waking from a dream
He saw himself: His right leg
Was a withered stump

The boys ran with nimble legs
Across that playing field
Under the elm tree stood
One crippled

Who, his body trembling
His skin grey, turned away
As if his heart under
His brown coat would burst

Joyous cries still travelled
Hearty laughs still rang out
Over the sunlit sand
Which the elm tree shaded
