Pero yo lo acariciaba
Como mi padre le hablaba
Y acabó siendo mi amigo
Se llamaba El Cascabel
No había caballo como él
Tan ladino y presumido
Pero extrañaba a mi padre
Yo le notaba al montarle
Tristeza en su relinchido
Un día me fui a galopar
Alguien lo quiso comprar
Me daban lo que quisiera
Con las orejas paradas
Aventó un par de patadas
Como si el penco entendiera
Pero un día se me escapó
Cuando mi padre cumplió
De su muerte un año exacto
Y aquel caballo precioso
Se fue a matar en un pozo
Cerquita del camposanto
Aquel caballo murió

My Father's Horse

When my father passed away
He left many a thing
A ranch in the lands of Jalisco
A silver-mounted saddle
A nickel-plated pistol
And a beautiful horse
He wouldn't allow a saddle
Much less allow himself to be ridden
By any meddler
But I would pet him
As my father had taught me
And he ended up becoming my friend
His name was Cascabel
There was no horse like him
So cunning and presumptuous
But he missed my father
I knew it upon mounting him
By the sadness in his neigh
One day I went for a gallop
Someone wanted to buy him
They offered me anything I wanted
With his ears perked up
He tossed his hind legs
As if the nag understood
But one day he escaped
When my father's death
Marked a year of its passing
And that beautiful horse
Went to die in a well
Very near to the cemetery
That horse perished,
Never forgetting
The one who had been his beloved master
They say that over yonder in Monte Grande
My father's horse,
His neigh can still be heard
