It filled their being again with the scent of the sea
Y un aroma a ramitos de incienso.
And the aroma of incense sticks.
Pedro puso a sonar aquel disco de Brel,
Pedro put on a Brel record,
Juan cerró las pequeñas ventanas,
Juan closed the small windows,
Recordaron su ayer, recordaron la miel
They thought of their past, thought of the honey
And until dawn they gave each other their souls...
Pajarillos de colores, en los campos
Colorful birds, in the fields
Que guarda el Señor.
That the Lord keeps.
Pedro invents a faith, almost in a flight of love,
Hace tanto que vive a su lado.
He has lived by its side for so long.
He knows well that they will go, he knows that they will come
Almanaques con días prestados.
Calendars with borrowed days.
Juan prefiere morir a su piel
Juan prefers to die in her skin
Y le lava los pies desolado,
And he washes her feet in despair,
Because it is hard to know that there is nothing to do
And there is a world looking the other way...
Pajarillos de colores en los campos
Colorful birds in the fields
Que guarda el Señor.
That the Lord keeps.
When they both leave an angel of the sun comes down
Y el invierno se vuelve verano,
And winter turns to summer,
They are two men who go dying of love
A soñar, por los que no soñamos,
To dream, for those of us who do not dream,
That he who dies of love makes the world a better place,
Y hay millones muriendo y amando...
And there are millions dying and loving...
Pajarillos de colores en los campos
Colorful birds in the fields
Que guarda el Señor.
That the Lord keeps.
I learned the story from the mouth of one of them. They are both terminally ill with AIDS and had been separated for a while, but when they found out about their illness they met again and decided to live together again. Today they collaborate and work hard in a Foundation dedicated to alleviating the suffering of those who suffer from this terrible disease and are discriminated against by society and even by their own families.
This song is a tribute to that love capable of containing them and making them supportive of others.
