My dad used to raise turkeys for Christmas
And about a week before he'd take them into town
He always kept ther biggest one 'specially for us
And mom'd cook it till it was golden brown.

One year he brought the usual batch home
Just hatched with a lot of growing to do
There was one awful skinny like he put in my care
He never figured he'd pull through.

I named him Henry and with a young boys touch
I finally got him to grow
Now I knowed what'd happen if he'd growed to much
I remember, I used to tell him so.

Henry you're growing a-way to fast
Dad's got his eye on you
And Christmas day is goin' to be you last
Eating the way you do.

Course I never thought about the one dad sold
How they'd end up in the oven too
But I'd seen what happened when the ones he'd chose
And what him and that axe could do.

Early one morning dad took 'em to town
And sure enough Henry was left
And by Christmas eve the way I moped around
They all knew how bad I felt.

After supper dad left the house
And everything was quiet exceptn' the old hall clock
It was a long, long wait (tic tock, tic tock,. tic tock, tic tock, tic)
Then we jumped straight up when the axe hit that choppin' block.

We shot out the back door to where dad was
All of us a-runnin' around
And dad just stood there grinnin' at us
Then we heared a goblin sound.

No, we didn't have turkey that Christmas day
But that was alright with us
And there weren't a one of us
Who didn't want ot that way.

And you know Henry had a Merry Christmas...

Henry a eu un joyeux Noël

Mon père avait l'habitude d'élever des dindes pour Noël
Et environ une semaine avant, il les emmenait en ville

Et maman la faisait cuire jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit dorée.

Il y en avait une, horriblement maigre, comme s'il l'avait mise sous ma garde
Il n'avait jamais pensé qu'il s'en sortirait.

Je l'ai appelé Henry et avec une touche de jeune garçon
Je l'ai finalement fait grandir
Maintenant, je savais ce qui arriverait s'il grandissait trop
Je me souviens, je lui disais toujours ça.

Henry, tu grandis trop vite
Papa te surveille
Et le jour de Noël, ce sera ta dernière
Tu manges comme ça.

Bien sûr, je n'avais jamais pensé à celui que papa a vendu
Comment ils finiraient dans le four aussi
Mais j'avais vu ce qui arrivait à ceux qu'il avait choisis
Et ce que lui et cette hache pouvaient faire.

Tôt un matin, papa les a emmenés en ville
Et bien sûr, Henry est resté
Et le soir de Noël, la façon dont je déambulait morose
Ils savaient tous à quel point je me sentais mal.

Après le dîner, papa a quitté la maison
Et tout était calme sauf la vieille horloge du couloir
C'était une longue, longue attente (tic toc, tic toc, tic toc, tic toc, tic)
Puis nous avons sauté tout droit quand la hache a frappé ce bloc de hachage.

Nous avons filé par la porte arrière vers l'endroit où papa était
Nous tous, en courant
Et papa était juste là, nous souriant
Puis nous avons entendu un son de gobelin.

Non, nous n'avons pas eu de dinde ce jour de Noël
Mais ça nous allait très bien
Et il n'y en avait pas un seul parmi nous
Qui ne voulait pas que ce soit comme ça.

Et tu sais que Henry a eu un joyeux Noël...
