My life has now taken on meaning
Since these sinful eyes of mine behold
The sacred land with verdant meadows
Whose fame is oft told.
To me has this been granted by God:
To see the land, the holy sod,
Which He in human guise trod.

Splendid lands of wealth and might,
I have seen many, far and wide,
Yet thou art the flower.
What a marvel here befell!
That a maid should bear a child,
Lord of all the angels mild,
Was not this a wonder rare?

Here was He baptized, the Holy One,
That all mankind might be made pure
Here He died, betrayed and lowly,
That our bonds should not endure.
Else our fate had been severe.
Hail, O cross, and thorns, and spear!
Heathens, alas! your rage is clear.

Out of pity for us,
He suffered here the cruel severance.
Out of pity for us
He, the All-powerful, permitted cursing.
That we might escape from misery,
A marvel that is beyond measure,
Beyond all other marvel.

Then to Hell, the Son descended
From the tomb where He had lain,
By the Father still attended,
And the Spirit none can name:
In the One three are,
A shaft of arrows in unity.

When He Satan did defeat,

Holy is this very town,

To this land, so He has spoken,
A fearful judgment shall be dealt.
Widows' bonds shall then be broken
And the orphans' foe be felled,

Underneath a grievous power.
Woe to sinners in that hour!

All the judgment of an earthly court,
To none shall grant a moments respite from the charge,
For He will desire to order at once,
For the last day's tryst:
Whoever leaves a single sin,
Out of here, how desolate he will stand before Him,
Where he has neither surety nor kinsman.

Christians, pagans, Jews, contending,
Claim it as an heritage.
May God judge with endless grace
Through his blessed Trinity.
Strife is heard on every hand:
Ours the only righteous plea,
He will give us the land to peacably hold.
