while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Messenger and yourselves [from Makkah] for having believed in Allah, your Lord.
If they gain dominance over you, they would be enemies to you, and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil, and they wish that you would disbelieve. (2)
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you
but I have not [power to do] for you from Allah anything." [They said], "Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is the destination. (4)
Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion
- [forbids] that you make allies of them.
And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them.
And give the disbelievers what they have spent [as dowry]. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation.
And do not persist in keeping disbelieving wives, and ask [for the return of] what you have spent; and let them ask [for the return of] what they have spent.
And if any of your wives deserts you to the disbelievers and you are then compensated, then give to those who have lost their wives [an amount] like what they had spent.
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging allegiance, [give them the following terms:] that they will not associate anything with Allah
,
that they will not steal, that they will not commit unlawful sexual intercourse, that they will not kill their children, that they will not come with a false accusation they have devised between their arms and their legs,
and that they will not disobey you in what is right
- then accept their allegiance and ask Allah 's forgiveness for them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (12)
