TRANCE music can be traced back to GIORGIO MORODER's late-70s
Euro-disco. DONNA SUMMER's I FEEL LOVE,
used a sequencer and drum machine to perfection,
and became a disco anthem. But the first trance as we know it
emerged in 1992, when the rave scene in Berlin and Frankfurt
was in full swing. Two records in particular set the template:
Jam & Spoon's Stella, its euphoric melody later sampled by
trance luminaries such as BT and Paul van Dyk; and Hardfloor's
Acperience, which informed the harder end of trance.
Although the first wave of trance dominated club culture in 1993,
it was soon overtaken by drum'n'bass, then big beat,
and house music has now been reinvigorated by the likes of Basement Jaxx.
Worldwide, though, trance remains the default dance music of choice.
In 1999, trance enjoyed a dramatic resurgence, thanks to its
relatively accessible sound and a concerted marketing push.
It was used heavily in video games and TV commercials, and even
Hollywood began to embrace trance. It's since become almost ubiquitous,
the default dance form.
