Μα του περάσανε χαλκά οι Σαρακήνοι

Για το δικό του Θεό
Του κόσμου το άδικο
Σ' ένα Σουλτάνο μπροστά
Τον παν κατάδικο
τον λύνει αυτός
απ' τα δεσμά του
Κι έτσι ο φίλος μας κινάει να πει κι αλλού το κήρυγμα του

Σ' ένα πηγάδι σταματάει να ξεδιψάσει
Μα μια γυναίκα δεν αργεί να πλησιάσει
Ωραία στην όψη μα η καρδιά της δηλητήριο
Με το κορμί της τον καλεί σ' άλλο μαρτύριο

Για το δικό σου Θεό
Μαζί σου θα καώ
Της άπλωσε τα χέρια
Και βγήκαν περιστέρια
Πιστεύει αυτή
με τ' άγγιγμά του
Κι έτσι ο φίλος μας κινάει να πει κι αλλού το κήρυγμα του

Coi suoi compagni sulla via dei Saracini
Furono presi e bastonati, i poverini!

Che il Gran Sultano ascolto
E molto lo ammiro
Lo libero dalle catene
Cosi Francesco parti
Per Babilonia a predicare.

Για το φτωχούλη θα πω δυο λόγια απ' την Ασίζη
Που πήγε πέρα στην Βαβυλώνας το μετερίζι
Για να κηρύξει την ανθρωπιά την καλοσύνη

The Sultan of Babylon and the Woman (Il Sultano Di Babilona e la Prostituta)

In the land of Babylon, with a cassock instead of a spear,
A friend sets off on a journey overseas,
To preach humanity and kindness,
But the Saracens put chains on him, my dear.

For his own God,
The injustice of the world,
Before a Sultan,
They take him as a convict,
He releases him
From his bonds,
And so our friend sets off to preach his sermon elsewhere, my love.

At a well he stops to quench his thirst,
But a woman soon approaches,
Beautiful in appearance, but her heart is poison,
With her body she calls him to another torment, sweetheart.

For your God,
I will burn with you,
He stretched out his hands to her,
And doves emerged,
She believes
With his touch,
And so our friend sets off to preach his sermon elsewhere, darling.

Brother Francis once left for overseas,
To the lands of Babylon to preach,
With his companions on the road of the Saracens,
They were taken and beaten, the poor things!

Brother Francis spoke
And preached well
That the Great Sultan listened
And admired him greatly
He freed him from the chains
So Francis left
For Babylon to preach.

For the poor man from Assisi I will say a few words,
Who went over to the battlements of Babylon,
To preach humanity and kindness,
But the Saracens put chains on him.
