Πιάνω να ζωγραφίσω
τα παιδιά μες στην πλατεία

τα λόγια και τα στόματα.

Kάνω να ζωγραφίσω το φεγγάρι που γυρίζει
ζεστό και σκονισμένο από ταξίδι μακρινό
τα μάτια μου θολώνουν, κι ο αέρας π' αρμενίζει
μου λέει τραγούδι ξένο, τραγούδι αλλοπαρμένο.

Aμα δεν είναι όπως τα θες
δεν έχεις λόγους κι αφορμές,
δεν κάνεις βήμα.
Oσα κοστίζουν μια δραχμή
γι' άλλους κοστίζουν μια ζωή.
Δεν είναι κρίμα; Δεν είναι κρίμα;

Kάνω ν' αποφασίσω σκαλοπάτι να πατήσω
θολές και σκονισμένες μνήμες μου ζωντανές.
θεριά μου διψασμένα με κορμιά παραδεισένια
το δρόμο σας κοιτάζω ξυπνάω κι ανατριχιάζω.

Aμα δεν είναι όπως τα θες
δεν έχεις λόγους κι αφορμές,
δεν κάνεις βήμα.
Oσα κοστίζουν μια δραχμή

Children in the Square

I try to draw
the children in the square
as if they were like before
and as I would like them.

But everything changes
and they grab my hand
the colors have changed
the words and the mouths.
The eyes remained the same
in the lights and the games.

I try to draw the moon as it turns
warm and dusty from a distant journey
my eyes are blurred, and the wind that blows
sings me a foreign song, an alien song.

I try to decide which step to take
dim and dusty memories of mine are vivid.
