Зеленая лампа и грязный стол,
И правила над столом.
Сторож Сергеев глядит в стакан
И думает о былом;
Но вот приходят к нему друзья,
Прервав его мыслей ход.
И быстро вливают портвейна литр
Сторожу прямо в рот.
Друзья пришли к нему неспроста,
Пройдя не одну версту.
Они желают видеть его
На боевом посту.
И сторож Сергеев, забыв свой долг,
Ловит беседы нить;
И ставит стулья друзьям своим,
Поскольку им негде пить.
И он говорит с ними до утра,
Забыв обойти свой двор.
Он пьет, не глядя совсем на дверь,
Куда мог забраться вор;
Но ночь проходит, приходит день,
Как в мире заведено,
И сторож Сергеев упал под стол,
Допив до конца вино.
Зеленая лампа горит чуть-чуть,
И сменщик уж час как здесь.
А сторож Сергеев едва встает,
Синий с похмелья весь.
И он, трясясь, выходит за дверь,
Не зная еще куда;
Желает пива и лечь поспать
Скромный герой труда.

Guard Sergeyev

A green lamp and a dirty table,
And rules above the table's space.
Guard Sergeyev stares into his glass,
Reflecting on days gone by;
But then his friends arrive,
Interrupting his thoughts' flow.
And quickly pour a liter of port wine
Straight into the guard's mouth.
His friends came for a reason,
Having walked many a mile.
They wish to see him
At his battle station.
And guard Sergeyev, forgetting his duty,
Catches the thread of conversation;
And sets out chairs for his friends,
As they have nowhere to drink.
And he talks with them till dawn,
Forgetting to walk his rounds.
He drinks, not looking at the door at all,
Where a thief could have crept in;
But night passes, day comes,
As is the way of the world,
And guard Sergeyev falls under the table,
Having finished the wine to the last drop.
The green lamp barely flickers,
And his replacement has been here for an hour.
And guard Sergeyev barely gets up,
Entirely blue from the hangover.
And he, trembling, goes out the door,
Not knowing yet where to;
He desires beer and to lie down to sleep,
This humble hero of labor.
