Ревет сынок. Побит за двойку с плюсом,
Жена на локоны взяла последний рубль,
Супруг, убитый лавочкой и флюсом,
Подсчитывает месячную убыль.
Кряхтят на счетах жалкие копейки:
Покупка зонтика и дров пробила брешь,
А розовый капот из бумазейки
Бросает в пот склонившуюся плешь.
Над самой головой насвистывает чижик
(Хоть птичка божия не кушала с утра),
На блюдце киснет одинокий рыжик,
Но водка выпита до капельки вчера.
Дочурка под кроватью ставит кошке клизму,
В наплыве счастья полуоткрывши рот,
И кошка, мрачному предавшись пессимизму,
Трагичным голосом взволнованно орет.
Безбровая сестра в облезлой кацавейке
Насилует простуженный рояль,
А за стеной жиличка-белошвейка
Поет романс: "Пойми мою печаль"
Как не понять? В столовой тараканы,
Оставя черствый хлеб, задумались слегка,
В буфете дребезжат сочувственно стаканы,
И сырость капает слезами с потолка.

The Situation

The son is roaring, beaten for a B minus,
The wife has taken the last ruble for hairspray,
The husband, killed by the bench and flux,
Is calculating the monthly loss.
He groans over the bills with pathetic kopecks:
Buying an umbrella and firewood has made a hole,
And the pink chintz nightgown
Drives the bald man into a sweat.
Above his very head a siskin is whistling
(Although the little bird hasn't eaten since morning),
A solitary orange mushroom is souring on a saucer,
But the vodka was drunk to the last drop yesterday.
Under the bed, the daughter is giving the cat an enema,
Her mouth half open in an excess of happiness,
And the cat, given over to gloomy pessimism,
Cries out in an agitated, tragic voice.
The eyebrowless sister in a threadbare jacket
Is raping the suffering piano,
And behind the wall the seamstress lodger
Is singing the romance: “Understand My Sadness”
How not to understand? In the dining room the cockroaches,
Leaving the stale bread, are thinking deeply,
The glasses in the cupboard are sympathetically rattling,
And dampness drips from the ceiling in tears.
