Кто бы мне сказал в письме или словом,
Отчего печаль присуща коровам?
Отчего лежит она в поле не скачет,
Отчего мычит она, будто плачет?

А с чего корове той веселиться? -
И удой плохой и надо телиться...
Если кормят их бедняг только сеном,
А ежели что не так - по спине поленом.

И поля зовут, но бежать не стоило, -
Все равно найдут - за рога и в стойло.
Если с детских лет коровьи души
Лечит старый дед кнутом пастушьим.

Ежели веру в чудо у них убили,
Ежели было худо и не любили,
Ежели даже кто-то холит и нежит,
Так это только тот, кто потом зарежет.

Я ее ласкал и кормил шоколадкой,
А себя терзал ужасной загадкой:
Что вот она моргает и не понимает,
Что взгляд ее мне что-то напоминает.

Cows' Lament (2)

Who told me in a letter, or in a word,
That inherent sadness is cows' reward?
Why do they lie inertly in the field?
Why do they moo so loudly, as if their hearts will yield?

What cause has the cow to be happy? -
Apart from her poor milking output, and calving so sappy...
If they feed the poor things only hay,
And if anything goes amiss, with a pole they flay.

And the meadows call, but there's no escape -
They'll find them all, by their horns, they'll be carted to the cowshed's shape.
If from their young days, bovine spirits
An archaic shepherd treats with his whip's merits.

When their faith in good fortune has been rudely erased,
If their lives were unkind, and they were never embraced,
If even those who tend to them, love and cherish,
Do so only until they meet their cruel perish.

I've caressed her, and fed her chocolate,
Yet I'm tormented by a terrible quandary, for all my preoccupation:
That there she blinks, and doesn't comprehend
That her eyes remind me of something.
