На её стороне

Дело было в Казани, дело кончилось плохо,
Хотя паруса его флота были из самоцветных камней.
На него гнула спину страна и эпоха,
Но она была в шелковом платье и много сильней.
Утро не предвещало такого расклада,
Кто-то праздновал Пасху, где-то шла ворожба.
И Волга мирно текла, текла, куда ей было надо,
И войска херувимов смотрели на то, как вершилась судьба.
На подъездах к собору пешим не было места,
На паперти - водка-мартини, соболя-жемчуга;
Но те, кто знал, знали, когда пойдут конвой и невеста,
Лучше быть немного подальше, если жизнь дорога.
Когда вышел священник, он не знал, что ему делать,
То ли мазать всех миром, то ли блевать с алтаря.
А жених, хоть крепился, сам был белее мела,
А по гостям, по которым не плакал осиновый кол, рыдала петля.
И никто не помнит, как это было,
А те кто помнят, те в небе или в огне,
А те, кто сильны - сильны тем, что знают где сила.
А сила на ее стороне.
Говорят, что был ветер - ветер с ослепительным жаром,
Говорят, что камни рыдали, когда рвалась животворная нить,
А еще говорят, что нельзя вымогать того, что дается даром
И чем сильнее ты ударишься об воду, тем меньше хлопотать-хоронить.
Он один остался в живых. Он вышел сквозь контуры двери,
Он поднялся на башню. Он вышел в окно.
И он сделал три шага - и упал не на землю, а в небо,

It all went down in Kazan, it ended in despair,

Best be far away, if life to you is dear.
When the priest emerged, he knew not what to do,
Whether to anoint them all, or vomit from the altar too.
And the groom, though holding strong, was paler than the snow,
And a noose, not an aspen stake, made tears for guests below.
And no one remembers how it all went down,
Those who do, they're in heaven or the ground,
And those who are strong, their strength is knowing where power lies.
And the power is on her side.
They say there was a wind - a wind with blinding heat,
They say the stones wept when the life-giving thread did retreat,
And they also say you can't extort what's freely given,
And the harder you hit the water, the less fuss with burying and living.
He alone survived. He walked through the doorway's frame,
He climbed the tower. He stepped out the window pane.
And he took three steps - and fell not to the earth, but to the sky,
She caught him in her arms, for they were one, you and I.
