Полководец с шеею короткой
Должен быть в любые времена:
Чтобы грудь - почти от подбородка,
От затылка - сразу чтоб спина.
На короткой незаметной шее
Голове уютнее сидеть,-
И душить значительно труднее,
И арканом не за что задеть.
А они вытягивают шеи
И встают на кончики носков:
Чтобы видеть дальше и вернее -
Нужно посмотреть поверх голов.
Все, теперь ты - темная лошадка,
Даже если видел свет вдали,-
Поза - неустойчива и шатка,
И открыта шея для петли.
И любая подлая ехидна
Сосчитает позвонки на ней,-
Дальше видно, но - недальновидно
Жить с открытой шеей меж людей.
...Вот какую притчу о Востоке
Рассказал мне старый аксакал.
"Даже сказки здесь - и те жестоки",-
Думал я - и шею измерял.

Ballad of a Short Neck (Live)

A commander with a neck quite short,
Should be so in any time and sort:
So his chest is almost near his chin,
From the back of his head his back begins.
On a short and unnoticeable neck,
It's much comfier for the head to rest, you see,
And it's harder to strangle, I suspect,
And no lasso can find a place to set.
But they stretch their necks out long and thin,
And stand up on the tips of their toes:
To see further and with clearer vision,
They must look above the others' nose.
Now you're a dark horse, my dear,
Even if you've seen the light afar,
Your stance is unstable, full of fear,
And your neck is open to the scar.
And any sneaky, spiteful snake,
Will count the vertebrae upon your nape,
You see further, but it's a mistake,
To live with an open neck, for goodness sake.
...This is the parable of the East,
That an old aksakal told me one day.
"Even fairy tales here are cruel beasts,"
I thought - and measured my neck, come what may.
