Песня автомобилиста

Отбросив прочь свой деревянный посох,
Упав на снег и полежав ничком,
Я встал - и сел в "погибель на колесах",
Презрев передвижение пешком.
Я не предполагал играть с судьбою,
Не собирался спирт в огонь подлить,-
Я просто этой быстрою ездою
Намеревался жизнь себе продлить.
Подошвами своих спортивных "чешек"
Топтал я прежде тропы и полы -
И был неуязвим я для насмешек,
И был недосягаем для хулы.
Но я в другие перешел разряды -
Меня не примут в общую кадриль,-
Я еду, я ловлю косые взгляды
И на меня, и на автомобиль.
Прервав общенье и рукопожатья,
Отворотилась прочь моя среда,-
Но кончилось глухое неприятье -
И началась открытая вражда.
Я в мир вкатился, чуждый нам по духу,
Все правила движения поправ,-
ОРУДовцы мне робко жали руку,
Вручая две квитанции на штраф.
Я во вражду включился постепенно,
Я утром зрел плоды ночных атак:
Морским узлом завязана антенна...
То был намек: с тобою будет так!
Прокравшись огородами, полями,
Вонзали шила в шины, как кинжал,-
Я ж отбивался целый день рублями -
И не сдавался, и в боях мужал.
Безлунными ночами я нередко
Противника в засаде поджидал,-
Но у него поставлена разведка -
И он в засаду мне не попадал.
И вот - как "языка" - бесшумно сняли
Передний мост и унесли во тьму.
Передний мост!. Казалось бы - детали,
Но без него и задний ни к чему.
Я доставал рули, мосты, колеса,-
Не за глаза красивые - за мзду.
Но понял я: не одолеть колосса,-
Назад - пока машина на ходу!
Назад, к моим нетленным пешеходам!
Пусти назад, о, отворись, сезам!
Назад в метро, к подземным пешеходам!
Разгон, руль влево и - по тормозам!
...Восстану я из праха, вновь обыден,
И улыбнусь, выплевывая пыль:
Теперь народом я не ненавидим
За то, что у меня автомобиль!

The Motorist's Song

Casting aside my wooden walking stick,
Falling on snow, face down I did lie,
I rose and took the "death on wheels" for a trip,
Scorning the act of walking by.
With fate I never intended to play,
Nor pour more spirits on an open flame,
I simply wished, with this fast-paced way,
To prolong my life, that was my aim.
The soles of my "cheshki" athletic and light,
Once trod on paths and floors, leaving no trace,
Invulnerable I was to mocking spite,
And from all slander I was safe in my space.
But now I've entered a different sphere,
They won't accept me in their common dance,
As I drive, I catch the sidelong leer,
Directed at me and my conveyance.
Cutting off handshakes and conversations,
My former circle turned their backs on me,
But the silent rejection found cessation,
And open hostility began to be.
I rolled into a world, alien in soul,
Breaking all the rules of the road's command,
Traffic officers timidly took their toll,
Handing me two fine receipts in my hand.
Gradually, I joined the feud's cruel game,
Each morning, I saw the fruits of night attacks:
Antenna tied in a nautical knot's tight frame...
A clear hint: "This is what you'll get, you lack!"
Sneaking through gardens, fields, under the moon,
They stabbed my tires with awls, like a dagger's thrust,
I fought back all day long with rubles, it's true,
And never surrendered, growing strong as I must.
On moonless nights, I often took my stand,
Waiting for my foe in an ambush concealed,
But they had their own scouts across the land,
And they never fell into the traps I revealed.
And then, like capturing a "tongue" in the night,
They silently took the front axle away,
The front axle! Just a part, it seemed light,
But without it, the rear one's useless, they say.
I acquired steering wheels, axles, and tires,
Not for pretty looks, but with bribes, I confess.
But I realized I couldn't conquer these liars,
Back while the car's still able to progress!
Back to my eternal pedestrian clan!
Let me return, oh sesame, open wide!
Back to the metro, to the underground man!
Acceleration, left turn, and brakes applied!
...I shall rise from the ashes, ordinary once more,
And smile, spitting out the dust, I declare:
Now I'm not hated by the people, that's for sure,
Because I have a car, beyond compare!
