Как-то вечером патриции
Собрались у Капитолия
Новостями поделиться и
Выпить малость алкоголия

Не вести ж бесед тверёзыми!
Марк-патриций не мытарился
Пил нектар большими дозами
И ужасно нанектарился

И под древней под колонною
Он исторг из уст проклятия
"Эх, ребята, с почтенною матрёною
Разойдусь я скоро, братия!

Она спуталась с поэтами
Помешалась на театрах
Так и шастает с билетами
На приезжих гладиаторов!

"Я, — кричит, — от бескультурия
Скоро стану истеричкою!"
В общем, злобствует как фурия
Поощряема сестричкою!

Только цыкают и шикают
Ох, налейте снова мне "двойных"!
Мне ж рабы в лицо хихикают
На войну бы мне, да нет войны!

Я нарушу все традиции
Мне не справиться с обеими
Опускаюсь я, патриции
Дую горькую с плебеями!

Я ей дом оставлю в Персии
Пусть берет сестру-мегерочку
И на отцовские сестерции
Я заведу себе гетерочку

У гетер хотя безнравственней
Но они не обезумели
У гетеры пусть всё явственней
Зато родственники умерли

Там сумею исцелиться и
Из запоя скоро выйду я!"
И пошли домой патриции
Марку пьяному завидуя

Family Affairs in Ancient Rome

One evening, the patricians
Gathered at the Capitol
To share news and
Quench their thirst with copious alcohol

After all, serious discussions couldn't be held sober!
Mark the patrician had indulged freely
He drank nectar in large doses
And became incredibly intoxicated

And beneath the ancient column
He spewed curses from his mouth
"Oh, my friends, with my esteemed matriarch,
I shall soon part ways, my brethren!

She has become entangled with poets
Obsessed with theaters
She saunters about with tickets
For visiting gladiators!

"I, — she proclaims, — out of my cultural void
Shall soon become hysterical!"
In short, she rages like a fury
Encouraged by her little sister!

But they only hush and shush me
Oh, pour me another "double"!
My slaves snicker in my face
If only there was a war to fight, but there isn't!

I shall break all traditions
I cannot cope with these two
I am going to pieces, patricians
I am drinking myself to oblivion with the plebeians!

I shall leave her a house in Persia
She can take her shrewish sister with her
And with her dowry from our father,
I shall procure a mistress

Although courtesans may be less virtuous
At least they aren't out of their minds
